First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good +. First Edition. Each volume the first printing of the first edition, duodecimo size, approx. 3300 total pp. Edmund Wilson, Jr. (1895-1972) "is widely regarded as one of the most important literary critics of the 20th century." A winner of the National Book Award twice, Wilson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 (n.b., quote and info from Wiki). This set spans the five decades of Wilson's adult life, with edits being done by Leon Wilson and Lewis Dabney, as the set was published posthumously. As stated in the jacket flap for "The Twenties", these journals "provide perhaps the largest authentic document of the time, the obsevations of one of the principal actors" in American culture. ___DESCRIPTION: Each volume bound in (a different colour) cloth over boards, gilt lettering stamped onto the spine, each volume with a black-and-white reproduction of a photograph of the author (also used on the front of the dust jackets); duodecimo size (varies slightly, approx. 7 1/2" by 4 3/4"), approx. 3300 total pages. The dust jacket for the first volume is price-clipped, the rest show their original prices on the front flaps, with summary of the book on the jacket flaps. ___CONDITION: Volumes near fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, three of the volumes free of prior owner markings and two with the prior owner name in blue ink at the top of the front free endpaper along with a date (presumably of purchase); a few light scattered marks and dustiness, else fine. The jackets vary between very good and near fine, all with some light wear (the second volume, "The Thirties", showing the most with slight paper loss at the head and tail of the spine and a small hole at the front joint), most of the spines sunned. Overall, a set with near fine books in better than very good jackets. ___POSTAGE: Please note that the set as a whole is unusually heavy and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
