About this Item: Random House, New York, 1971. Condition: Near fine in fine jacket. First edition. First printing of the book at the heart of the Hunter S. Thompson legend, a beautiful copy. A desperate, drug-fueled experiment in 'gonzo' journalism, FEAR AND LOATHING was written during Thompson's stint as Washington Correspondent for Rolling Stone, and first appeared in the magazine in serial installments. Straddling the hazy border between thinly-veiled fiction and experimental journalism, first composed in feverish hotel-room notebook-scribbling sessions, the book remains HST's best-known and most influential work. Surreal, hallucinatory, endlessly quotable. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original blind-stamped grey boards, backed in black cloth with silver lettering to spine. In original unclipped dust jacket, designed by Susan Schwab, illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Black and white illustrations by Steadman throughout. 206 pages. Jacket with barest rubbing to spine foot, faint spot to verso of spine head, close inspection only. Book edges just sunned, minimal foxing to text block edges. Much nicer than usually seen. About this Item: Random House, New York, 1971. First Printing of the First Edition. A Near Fine copy with the usual touch of sunning to board edges in a Near Fine bright unclipped dust jacket with a short closed edge tear to the top edge of the front panel and a crease to the front flap. No names, writing, tears or chips to the jacket. The book is a roman à clef, rooted in autobiographical incidents. The story follows its protagonist, Raoul Duke, and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, as they descend on Las Vegas to chase the American Dream through a drug-induced haze, all the while ruminating on the failure of the 1960s countercultural movement. The work is Thompson's most famous, and is noted for its lurid descriptions of illegal drug use, its early retrospective on the culture of the 1960s, and its popularization of Thompson's highly subjective blend of fact and fiction that has become known as gonzo journalism. About this Item: Applause, 1997. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Near fine in pictorial wraps. Signed by Gilliam (with a doodle of a pencil), Grisoni and Leila Nabulsi (a producer of the film, with the comment "Wise up!") on the half-title page, and by Johnny Depp (a star of the film, along with Benicio del Toro) on the inside of the front cover. With all of Gilliam's storyboards alongside the script. The authoring of the screenplay was deeply controversial. Alex Cox and Tod Davies wrote a script that was thrown out; Gilliam and Grisoni rewrote the script shortly before filming. The matter led to Gilliam burning his Writers' Guild card at a signing in New York. The "NOT" of the title, therefore, is a reference to this kerfuffle. Signed by Author(s).
