First Edition
First edition 1981. Hardback. 178pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Farming and wildlife affect each other in many, often subtle, ways. many developments in farming practice have been harmful to wild plants and animals. As the land is made to yield more, so rare species become rarer or even extinct, and even more common ones are beginning to be absent from large parts of the country. This provocative book argues that wild species are actually beneficial to the land as a whole - without them its productivity will fall and farming will ultimately suffer. The main changes in farming practice and their environmental effects are dealt with systematically. The book also discusses arable cropping, grassland management, animal husbandry, hedgerow removal, land drainage and pesticide use. Also considered are the care of the soil and its inhabitants, possible damage to livestock by diseases of wild animals and the effects of hunting and shooting. Prof. Mellanby writes with an understanding of the problems of both farmers and conservationists. 67 photographs in black & white. jacket design by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. Book in very good condition. Some slight marking and small pressure marks to upper board, one of the faint marks appears to be due to a hot cup or mug having been placed on top of the book - otherwise near fine. Internally clean and bright. Dust jacket very good. Unclipped. Slight discolouration to spine. Book.
