Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover 1st edition, Although this copy comes from a high school library and has a few stamps and stickers, it's in remarkably good shape. Clean and solid, and the dust jacket is covered in protective mylar. Much of the Canadian West was settled by farmers from the USA, hungry for new lands, especially with the recently complete railways. There was alway a movement of settlers across the US/Canadian border - United Empire Loyalists, runaway slaves along the underground railway, farmers seeking land, and later draft dodger. This is a study of immigration at the turn of the last century through the eyes of the federal civil service branch assigned to stimulate immigration, encourage publicity, and keep unwanted settlers - particularly the Negroes - out. 192 pages, indexed, some photographs.
