Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Privately Printed, Christmas, 1919. On the verso of the half-title page is a poem titled 'To the Memory of Elizabeth Tingle Fairbanks'. A blank page separates that from the title page, which is followed by the poem on six unnumbered pages. The last page states 'Of This Book Two Hundred Copies Were Printed For Thomas Nast Fairbanks, By William Edwin Rudge In December, 1919.' Age has not done much harm to this book. As you can see from the photos, the covers are rather clean. There is age toning at the margins. The spine is in very solid condition. The title label is present and unworn the spine is slightly slanted rearward, however the book is solidly bound, cover to cover. The pages are perfectly clean. There are no creases or dogeared corners. The bottom page edge is deckled or rough-cut, some pages consequently are a little jagged in places. There are no markings on any of the pages, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. A small bookplate on the front inside cover is the only attachment. It's the bookplate of a Mac Martin. I have listed two other William Makepeace Thackeray limited editions (The Chest of Cigars & The End of the Play) with his bookplate. He was a professor at the University of Minnesota and the 'co-founder of the Better Business Bureau. He was a nationally renowned leader in truth in advertising in the early part of this century. His greatest contribution was his leadership in the development of a self-regulatory agency in Minneapolis, through which business could police dishonesty in advertising and selling, an agency later to be internationally known as the Better Business Bureau. This first agency remains the basic model of Better Business Bureau work across the nation and internationally. Known to all as the dean of the Minneapolis advertising industry, Martin was the owner of a highly regarded advertising agency and was the author of numerous advertising campaigns that gained national attention.' He was inducted into the Advertising Hall Of Fame in 1962, four years after his passing. 'William Makepeace Thackeray cried "Go to.! when Charles Dickens turned down his application to illustrate Pickwick Papers. "If Dickens doesn't want me to draw the pictures for his book, I'll write my own books and then illustrate them myself." And that is precisely what Thackeray did. The succession of clever burlesques and character probes from his pen, all bearing his lively drawings, culminated ten years later in Vanity Fair, an illustrated novel that put Thackeray on a literary par with his amiable rival Dickens.'.
