Als Eugène Atget (18571927) an der Schwelle zum 20.Jahrhunderts mit einer damals schon veralteten, sperrigen und schweren Plattenkamera durch die Straßen und Vororte von Paris zog, um kleine Gewerbetreibende, Prostituierte, Gassen, Hinterhöfe, Fassaden, architektonische Details, Parks und Straßenfluchten zu fotografieren, tat er das im Bewusstsein, Augenzeuge einer verschwindenden Welt zu sein. Zwar dienten seine Bilder als Souvenirs oder Bildvorlagen für Maler wie George Braque, André Derain oder Maurice Utrillo durchaus prosaischen Zwecken, doch Atget selbst verstand sich als Stadtarchäologe, der flanierend und fotografierend eine umfassende Fotodokumentation seiner Wahlheimat Paris zusammenträgt. Atget blieb zu Lebzeiten weitgehend unbekannt, unterschied sich seine Fotografie durch ihre Präzision und dokumentarische Schärfe doch zu sehr vom bevorzugten malerischen Weichzeichnerstil seiner Epoche, doch wurde in den 1920er-Jahren die Avantgarde des Dadaismus und des Surrealismus durch Man Ray auf ihn aufmerksam. Vier seiner Bilder erschienen im Surrealistenblatt La Révolution surréaliste . Man Ray selbst und viele seiner Freunde erwarben Aufnahmen Atgets. Größere Bekanntheit erlangte der Fotograf jedoch erst posthum dank mehrerer Artikel und einer Monografie von Berenice Abbott , die Atget kurz vor seinem Tod über Man Ray kennengelernt hatte. Auf sein Vorbild beriefen sich später einige der berühmtesten Fotografen, darunter Walker Evans und Bill Brandt . Dieser Band zeigt rund 500 Fotografien von Atget, der, zu Lebzeiten verkannt, heute zu den Größen der frühen Fotokunst zählt und dessen Platten u. a. in der Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris oder dem Museum of Modern Art in New York verwahrt werden.
