Hardcover. Condition: Fair. iv, [1], 6-74 p. ; 20 cm. Hardcover. Spine lacking. Contemporary writing of "Davenport" on inside front board. Garrison-Morton 1604.1 (citing 1817 London ed.). Carlisle addressed himself directly to old people and advised the young to adopt a sound regimen early in life in order to secure longevity. He described diseases common to the aging and looked upon the age of 60 as the beginning of senility. His comments on surgical problems of the old were incorporated in one of the first specialty books on this subject. He pointed out that dangerous operations are rarely advisable in advanced age because of the reduction in vitality and the presence of constitutional disorders (Freeman, p. 45).

Rees' Disorders of the Stomach is a second edition, published by M. Allen in 1811. Very good antiquarian condition. Hinges remain firm. Two volumes bound as one. iv + 103 pages; xv + [blank] + 223 pages + 1 page of ads at rear. Heraldic bookplate of former owner on inside front cover. Signature of former owner on each title page. Carlisle's treatise on Old Age in particular is an important early contribution to the study of geriatrics. Both scarce. Some very light foxing, mainly to endpapers.
