Softcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First published in 1753, this satire on the pleasures of causing pain, addressed to both men and women, in fact reveals the art to be the one in which women have become masters. Collier demonstrates that the ways of the cat - alternately wounding and soothing the victim - are inculcated with the codes of feminine conduct and suggests that because they are denied access to the male tools of power, women fashion instruments of retaliation from the very chains of femininity. First Edition
8vo, engraved frontispiece and pp. [ii], 234; inner margin of title page discreetly strengthened; a large copy, in contemporary calf, slightly worn, joints beginning to crack. First edition of a famous teasing essay on the way to irritate others. This is the first known publication of Jane Collier (1715-55), who came from Wiltshire, but by the late 1740s was living in London. She was a friend of Sarah and Henry Fielding, and was almost certainly co-author with Sarah of The Cry, a clever novel published the following year, but she died in 1755 and her intelligent, ironic prose was largely forgotten except for this one book.

Second Edition, Corrected (first published in 1753). Collier, a novelist and close friend of Samuel Richardson, expounds the principles of teasing and tormenting: "Remember always to do unto every one, what you would least wish to have done unto yourself."
