Rompiendo con la tradición familiar, inicia en 1914 estudios de derecho en la Universidad de Viena. Con el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial se ve obligado a enrolarse y cae prisionero en la campaña contra Rusia. Tras la revolución rusa recorre a pie las estepas de Siberia y regresa a Viena en 1920. A los veinticuatro años emprende la carrera de historia y psicología, aunque para entonces ya ha descubierto su verdadera vocación de escritor, profesión en la que debuta con algunos ensayos líricos y su primera novela, La brecha (1924). En 1933, por intereses más laborales que ideológicos, Doderer se adhiere a la rama austríaca del Partido Nacionalsocialista Alemán de los Trabajadores, aunque en 1936 comenzará a alejarse gradualmente de su influencia y corriente de pensamiento. En 1938, afincado en Baviera, logra publicar Un asesinato que comete cualquiera, pero poco después, a finales de 1940, es llamado a filas como oficial de caballería. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial es destacado en numerosas y variadas ciudades europea.
