Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New, Not Price Clipped. Illustrated with Photographs (illustrator). First Edition/First Printing. An unread copy direct from the publisher, signed 'Artemis Cooper' to the title page. Elizabeth Jane Howard (1923-2014) wrote brilliant novels about what love can do to people, but the lasting relationship she sought so ardently alway eluded her. After the collapse of her first marriage to the naturalist Peter Scott, Jane embarked on a string of high-profile affairs, C. Day-Lewis, Arthur Koestler and Laurie Lee were among her lovers, and how Jane turned into a literary femme fatale provides a fascinating insight into pre-feminist history. Yet her image of sophistication hid a romantic innocence which clouded her judgement. A second marriage was almost over when she met Kingsley Amis, and for a few years they were a brilliant and glamourous couple - until that union also disintergrated. She settled in Suffolk, but her turbulent love life was not over yet. In her early seventies Jane fell for a conman. His unmasking was the final disillusion and inspired one of her most powerful novels, Falling. Signed Without Inscription. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo., 376pp. Beautiful First Edition, First Printing. Bound in grey cloth with titles in black spine. Square, tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. A gentle bump to the heel. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket, (£25), is fresh and bright with no chipping, creases or tears. Signed by the author on the title page. Also, tipped in with a piece of tape on the front paste-down, is a hand-written note on a postcard by the book's subject, Elizabeth Jane Howard. "I have now read your book with great pleasure. You really brought Chris back to me which I very much enjoyed. I thought the picture of her when she was 80 in Ireland was the most beautiful of her. Wish I'd known her then. Anyway, thank you again for a good, interesting record of her. Best wishes, Elizabeth Jane Howard". It is likely however that this note does not correspond to this work by Artemis Cooper. Though there are many photos, there does not appear to be anyone named Chris nor could I discover who this person was. There is a hand written name, Patricia Woods at the bottom of the postcard, though I could find no reference to her. A gorgeous collectable copy and quite scarce as with the written note.
