Published by Letter to his father: 17 March ; 'H.Q. 215 Town Mayor M.E.F.' Letters to his sister: 4 May 1944 and 4 October 1944. Both addressed from the MEF, 1944
Manuscript / Paper Collectible
All three are air mail letter cards. Each with 'Field Post Office' postmark and censor's stamp. The three in fair condition, lightly aged and creased. Letter One: To his father, 17 March [1944]. Addressed to 'My dear Father', with the envelope addressed to 'Sir E. de la Rue Bart. | The Sol | Cookham | Berkshire | England.' 1p, 4to, and 1p., 12mo. A light-hearted letter, in which he jokes about his father's inability to read the word 'Aviv' ('I suppose a series of "i"s and "v"s is rather difficult even if printed') and find the place on the map ('it is much larger than Bournemouth'). He also thanks him 'for all your work on investing my "large" fortune. If I stay out here much longer it really will be large! I dont spend all my pay anyhow so have got £100 here I think or something like it.' He hopes to return home that year: 'Five years out here is exactly five years too long.' He jokes that he will 'fly a neutral flag on the way back in case I get caught up in the second front or maybe the third front.' He explains that 'people of my age in what they call a combatant unit unless he is a Lt Col or above, must be getting very old! He 'carried an unused roll of bromo [lavatory paper] in my box for a long time & never used it. By chance it was put into use a month ago. I noticed each sheet was torn and buried at the bottom of it was a large piece of shrapnal! [sic] If that's where all the shrapnal goes I wont mind much!' He has sold his gun for ten pounds, 'on the strength of my belief I wont be here next winter. I sold it for what I gave for it £10 but I was told I was stupid as it was worth a lot more. I expect it was as one cannot get a gun in any place in the Middle East and it was in perfect condition - of course!' He ends by commenting on the quality of the food, and the 'stockings at £2 a pair'' he is sending his sister. Letter Two. To his sister, 4 May [1944]. Addressed (as is Letter Three) to 'My dear Diana', with the envelope addressed to Miss de la Rue, Rusper, Horsham, Sussex.' 3pp., 12mo. He begins 'I went into Cairo a week ago and bought you some food. We are not allowed to send more than 5 lbs and not more than 2 lbs of the same thing. So I sent you some jam, currants, and tea. I actually sent it to Mother so you may get it in 3 months time.' The 'heat is getting deplorable': 'You would have smiled this last week as I was told 1/2 an hour before, that I had to ride a motorbicycle in the desert for four days and nights. I had never been on one in my life and had half an hour to learn!' He 'only had one fall but got continuously stuck in the deep sand on the first day'. He tells her that she would have been 'awfully interested at times as we stood in a forest of trees. Tress were lying everywhere. They were exactly as they had fallen. The bark was the same colour as ordinary bark. You could see where all the catterpillars [sic] had burrowed in the wood and the rotten wood shone as if it were still wet. Some of the trees looked as if they had been choped [sic] down. They were all fosalized [sic] 3,000 years old! The extraordinary thing is they were still on the surface.' Towards the end he writes: 'I dont suppose it matters at all now telling you what you must have known before that last February year ago I was at Bengazi. It was far the best place to be so far as this regiment went, as in those days were were split up in Tobrook Crete and Cyprus as well.' They had 'a terribly comfortable mess': 'The Italian police in the town were charming, but the Australians I am afraid behaved very badly. It was always the soldiers with the big hats who the people did not like as they would say.' Letter Three: To his sister, 4 October [1944]. 3pp., 12mo. In pencil. He sees in the press that 'Bobby has got the D.S.O. How wonderful! [.] It was published in the papers alongside Hitler's speech to the Reich, and that seemed Bobbie's answer.' A great deal has been happening, but he can only say that 'the total show was magnificent'. 'Mo.

Vintage Photo Album of 93 black and white silver gelatin photographs and four real photo postcards showing a 1927 group trip through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, British Palestine, and Egypt. Photos measure between 2.5"x4" and 3.5"x5.5" with the exception of one large group photo measuring approx. 9"x7". Photos are mounted on sturdy black album boards with captions handwritten in white pencil and tissue paper sheets separating each page to preserve the images. String bound in lovely cloth boards with a bright flower pattern. The album follows a group of friends on a three week journey throughout southern Europe and the Middle East, beginning in Avignon, France and ending in Luxor, Egypt. Photographs show cityscapes and architecture around Avignon including St. Pierre's Church and the Popes' Palace before the group proceeds to Italy, landscape shots of Naples and images of the ruins of Pompeii, and some shots of the group on a ship captioned the S.S. Adriatic. The following page has shots from Athens, including the Parthenon and the Temple of Diana, as well as an earlier picture of one of their party in Nice, France. The group then moves on to Turkey, enclosing four real photo postcards from Constantinople just five years after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and before the city was officially renamed Istanbul in 1930. Images show the city's harbor, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, and the Hagia Sophia. One postcard loose and handwritten caption and date as well as a purple Arabic stamp can be seen on verso. The group moves south to Palestine, which was then under British Mandate. Images show local people and and street scenes in Nazareth, such as one captioned "A Jewish Maiden" showing a woman in beautiful traditional clothing and headdress. Shots of Jerusalem show Holy Sites including the River Jordan, the Wailing Wall and the Gardens of Gethsemane. The album concludes in Egypt, with beautiful images of archeological sites and local people across Thebes, Memphis, Cairo, and Luxor - the Obelisk of Hatshepsut, Edfu Temple, the tomb of Amenhotep II, the Colossi of Memnon, the Pyramids, and the Great Sphinx. The final page shows the group sitting on camels with the Great Sphinx and Pyramid of Giza in the background, names written in caption below. Overall very good condition. A fascinating album with many images of astounding ancient architecture in the midst of rapid global change between the Edwardian Era and World War II.

Seller: Antiquariat INLIBRIS Gilhofer Nfg. GmbH, Vienna, A, Austria
Folio (210 x 340 mm). 4 pp. Typescript. Lively report of an eventful flight taken by Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson (1884-1940), Civil Commissioner of Mesopotamia, aboard one of two RAF aircraft leaving Baghdad on 25 February 1919 bound for Cairo. Bad weather conditions and repeated engine trouble resulted in several emergency landings and delayed the journey, which Wilson eventually had to complete by train. - The first day of the trip involved heavy wind and a failing petrol pump causing the pilots Boyd, Nuttall and Lapraik to land and fix the pump near Tadmur before carrying on to Damascus, where they remained for three days of heavy rain. Upon continuing the journey on 28 February, one of the engines failed and the planes were forced to land in "difficult country". As repair seemed hopeless, Boyd decided to fly Wilson on to Ramleh and then return for Nuttall and Lapraik: "The taking off proved a difficult undertaking as the machine was firmly bogged, and the engine fall out would not move it. The Arabs however rendered enthusiastic assistance. About 200 of them surrounded the machine, and in spite of the fact that most of them pulled in different directions [.] after an hour's work and much shouting, succeeded in moving it to a comparatively firm piece of ground, from which it was possible to take off [.]". - When the aircraft got hopelessely bogged again near Tulkarm, Wilson continued his journey by train. In the meantime, Nuttall and Lapraik, who "were hospitably entertained by the Arabs", succeeded in a makeshift repair of the first plane's engine and picked up Boyd. The return flight to Baghdad with two substitute aircraft proved much smoother, involving only minor repairs and no emergency landings off the runway. The 500 mile distance between Damascus and Baghdad was completed in a non-stop flight of 4 hours 10 minutes "which probably constitutes a World's Record". - Slightly dampstained near right margins; a little foxed and creased. Traces of a rusty paper pin. A rare survival.

As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast.that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.".
