A Scot, who travelled extensively in his youth, and on settling in London obtained employment with the publisher Charles Knight, he became a minor figure in the capital's literary scene. His publications included works of history, biography and travel, as well as the historical novels. Samuel Pepys, The Clerk of the Navy, at the time of the Dutch incursion into the Medway in 1667, is one of the characters appearing in the novel.
