First published in the 19th century, this humorous poem is of poor John Gilpin and an amazing journey that he had. King Penguin  number 70. Softening of the back strip with some rubbing to the lower book edges and to the book corners. Dust marks and a little foxing to the top textblock edge and age toning of the pages. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges with creasing of the edges. There is a 0.5 " tear to the top edge of the rear panel. Heavy sunning of the back strip with rubs, marks and stains to the dustwrapper panels. Browning of the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. King Penguin, London 1954 Reprint 44pp Illustrated Hardback. A FINE bright and tight copybound in illustrated paper covered boards. There is a small neat signature of ownership to the f.e.p. There is a FINE unclipped dustwrapper that has been protected in removable clear protection film sine purchase. John Gilpin 18th Century was based upon a real life characterwhose exploits became legendary due to an amusing poem by William CowperHe was said tpo be a wealthy draper in Cheapside in London who owned land at Olney in Buckinghamshire near where Cowper lived. it is likely that he was actually a Mr Breyer a linen draper of the Cheapside corner of Paternoster Row. The poem tells how Gilpin, his wife and children become separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton after Gilpin loses control of his horse and is carried ten miles further to the town of Ware. Usually illustrated by Randolph Caldecott this edition has the benefit of forty two drawings by Ronald searle at the top of his form. Ref G2.

First edition with these illustrations. Original grey wrappers. One of 1600 copies. This is a presentation copy. Signed in dedication by the illustrator, Ronald Searle. It is inscribed on the FFEP with a message from Ronald Searle and his wife Kaye to his friend Leonard Russell and his wife, dated Christmas 1952. Leonard Russell was an English journalist and satirist, well known as editor of the annual miscellany known as The Saturday Book . No printer identified, but assume same as other copies available. [3] 44 [2] pages. 295 x 220 mm (11½ x 8¾ inches). Wrappers are a little age toned / grubby. There has been damage to the book from dampness, which has particularly affected the inside back cover, and the last two pages. Overall a good early presentation copy.
