(9534) Edizione la più completa, con le varie aggiunte successive alla prima (1673), come indicano i diversi Privilèges posti al termine do ogni capitolo, che vanno dal 1673 al 1692. Simon Foucher (1644-1796), "canoine de Dijon e Conseiller du Parlement", scrisse quest'opera soprattutto per criticare la filosofia di Melebranche e di Descartes, affermando contro i "dogmatistes" il diritto al dubbio e allo scetticismo in campo filosofico e scientico, che non sono in contrasto di per sè con la fede. Significativo il cap. XIII, De l'Art de douter, ove afferma: "il vaut encore mieux que l'on manque en doutant trop, qu'en affirmant plus qu'on ne doit". La figura di Foucher, che sviluppò tra l'altro un'intensa corrispondenza epistolare con Leibniz, è stata progressivamente rivalutata e studiata in tempi recenti dagli storici della scienza e del pensiero filosofico.
