Book
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Original Edition. Hardback. Foxing to end inside overs and edge. Mrks to back cloth. Sunned spine to cloth. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. The object of thsis book is to provide, in a single volume, the information which students require complementary to a history of English literature or to the special study of a part of it. Briefly, it comprises general articles on movements or topics continuous through several centuries and countries; concise surveys of the literary history of the chief countries; critical and biographical accounts, with a minimum of bibliography, of major and minor writers, and definitions of such literary terms as the student or general reader is likely to encounter. America is excluded geographically, and the Orient on the further ground, stated by Saintsbury in the 'new Hallam', that 'no one is likely to succeed in laying down the exact connection between Eastern, Western, and, as go-between, Byzantine literature'. Our own literature is admitted rather fully. The point of view has been Euorpean, not insular; but it has seemed clear that a companion to English studies should not neglect the studies which it accompanies. 594 pp.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
