Top front corner slightly bumped and binding just barely skewed. A very fine copy, difficult to find in this condition. In the original color pictorial dust jacket. Jacket with some minor splitting along creases and chipping at head and tail of the spine, but with no restoration. Some general sunning, bit overall a very nice jacket. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "To Bill/In exchange for/ 12 cherrystones/ With affection/ From/ Ian." A wonderful book with an exceptional provenance. Inscribed by Fleming to his good friend Sir William Stephenson, aka "Bill." We acquired this copy from the grandson of famous auto maker. E.L. Cord. Cord, Fleming and Stephenson were all close friends and Cord and Stephenson owned an airplane factory together producing spitfires. Cord acquired Bill's collection of Fleming books and his grandson eventually took ownership. Butterfields and Butterfields sold three other Fleming books inscribed to "Bill" acquired from the same source at their 4/16/1997 sale. The inscription is also of note as Fleming writes "To Bill/In exchange for/ 12 cherrystones/ With affection/ From/ Ian." and in chapter 16 this book, Fleming writes "Twenty minutes after he had sat down, Bond was able to order a dozen cherrystone clams and a steak, and, since he expected a further long pause, a second Vodka dry Martini." Our inscription recipient Sir William "Bill" Stephenson is of utmost interest as he is considered the basis of the character of James Bond. Sir William "Bill" Stephenson, was a "Canadian soldier, airman, businessman, inventor, spymaster, and the senior representative of British Security Coordination (BSC) for the entire western hemisphere during World War II. He is best known by his wartime intelligence codename Intrepid. Many people consider him to be one of the real-life inspirations for James Bond. Ian Fleming himself who once worked under Stephenson, once wrote, âJames Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is . William Stephenson.'. As head of the British Security Coordination, Stephenson handed over British scientific secrets to Franklin D. Roosevelt and relayed American secrets to Winston Churchill. In addition, Stephenson has been credited with changing American public opinion from an isolationist stance to a supportive tendency regarding America's entry into World War II. Stephenson was soon a close adviser to Roosevelt, and suggested that he put Stephenson's good friend William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan in charge of all U.S. intelligence services. Donovan founded the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which in 1947 would become the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). As senior representative of British intelligence in the western hemisphere, Stephenson was one of the few persons in the hemisphere who were authorized to view raw Ultra transcripts of German Enigma ciphers that had been decrypted at Britain's Bletchley Park facility. He was trusted by Churchill to decide what Ultra information to pass along to various branches of the U.S. and Canadian governments. Not least of Stephenson's contributions to the war effort was the setting up by BSC of Camp X, the unofficial name of the secret Special Training School No. 103, a Second World War paramilitary installation for training covert agents in the methods required for success in clandestine operations. Camp X graduates operated in Europe (Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Balkans) as well as in Africa, Australia, India and the Pacific. They may have included Ian Fleming (though there is evidence to the contrary), future author of the James Bond books. It has been said that the fictional Goldfinger's raid on Fort Knox was inspired by a Stephenson plan (never carried out) to steal $2,883,000,000 in Vichy French gold reserves from the French Caribbean colony of Martinique. For his extraordinary service to the war effort, he was made a Knight Bachelor by King George VI in the 1945 New Year Honours. In recommending Stephenson for the knighthood, Winston Churchill wrote: âThis one is dear to my heart.' In November 1946 Stephenson received the Medal for Merit from President Harry S. Truman, at that time the highest U.S. civilian award. He was the first non-American to be so honoured." [Spy thriller] FIRST EDITION, Binding A. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.257 [1]. Publisher's black cloth titled in silver, with the pictorial dust-jacket designed by Pat Marriott priced at 12/6. Inscribed by the author to flyleaf "To Paul, /who spread his / wings over / my first born. // with affection / from / Ian [underline]". A little spotting, heavier to top edge, jacket slightly toned to spine. Very good, in an elegant leather-spined collector's clamshell box. The recipient is Paul Gallico, friend and champion of the budding author Fleming. He was the person who first 'spotted 007', according to both the present inscription, and Fleming's biographer John Pearson (writing in the Sunday Times, Paul Gallico obituary, 18th July 1976). A significant association, and the greatest and most poignant of the known Fleming-Gallico presentations, on one of the most difficult Bond titles to acquire signed. A remarkable combination. Diamonds are Forever, Ian Fleming, first edition, first impression (with 'Boofy' for 'Dolly'), advance presentation copy inscribed to Fleming's friend John Hayward; Jonathan Cape 1956. Inscribed with the words 'For John & his blue pencil from Ian'. A superb example of his rarely inscribed novel, the fourth James Bond book. The words 'his blue pencil' refer to John Hayward's important role as an editor, proof-reader and checker of content - Hayward went through the manuscripts and made corrections to each Fleming novel prior to publication, and in this case, after publication. Indeed Hayward has made several corrections to the pages of this copy, listing each page where he has made a correction to the rear inflap of the jacket (see the photos). These corrections - including a missing full stop to the top of p91 which Hayward has identified and marked - represent changes made to subsequent printings. John Hayward was an important person in literary London of the time; he was a close friend of TS Eliot and lived together with the poet in a flat in Chelsea, helping Eliot with editorial and textual revisions of his published works. Ian Fleming appointed Hayward as editor of the magazine The Book Collector in 1952, a position Hayward remained in till midway through the following decade. A highly significant association copy, inscribed to a person who occupied an important position making textual corrections to Fleming's works, as evinced by the dedication and the corrections made by Hayward to the existing text. The book is in near fine condition. Indeed the book is fine in virtually every respect: sharp corners, firm spine foot, very light pushing to spine tip, spotless black boards, no bumps to the board edges, bright silver book title, author name and publisher to the spine, no lean to the book which remains very firm; book is very clean inside, with a spotless and unmarked text block, no dog-eared pages, pages all being entirely smooth, with no tears, tugs or nicks. The only fault is a small puncture to the cloth of the front board, near the right edge; otherwise this is a lovely copy. The jacket is the correct first state jacket; not price-clipped. Rubbing to the edges, short closed-edge tear to top of front panel, light rubbing to the corners, small hole on front panel commensurate with the puncture to the cloth, and another small patch of rubbing above it, clean jacket verso. Very slight toning to the spine, but otherwise a very good jacket. Presented in a collector's black cloth clamshell box. First edition of the fourth novel in Ian Flemingâs James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Boldly signed by Sean Connery opposite the title page. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed by this iconic figure who first embodied James Bond in film. Diamonds are Forever was first published by Jonathan Cape in March 1956, and the first printing quickly sold 12,500 copies. These sales expanded further when Prime Minister Anthony Eden visited Fleming's Jamaican Goldeneye estate (Lindner, 2009). Of course, the sales are owed mostly to the novel's suspenseful plot and themes. The dust cover of the first edition can, in some sense, be seen an allusion to these themes. On Diamonds are Forever, designed by Pat Marriot, we see a tame image of an elegant woman wearing a large diamond. Towards the end of the novel, Fleming writes "Death is forever. But so are diamonds." Diamonds are metaphorical for death, and Bond is death's messenger because he carries the diamonds from London to New York. This is reflective of the immense novelty diamonds had to the British populous at that time (Benson, 1988). The Observer would write, "[Bond is] one of the most cunningly synthesised heroes in crime-fictionMr. Fleming's method is worth noting, and recommending: he does not start indulging in his wilder fantasies until he has laid down a foundation of factual description." It was the basis for the 1971 film bearing the same name directed by Guy Hamilton starring Sean Connery, Jill St. John and Charles Gray.

Bound using navy blue goatskin leather, with its spine decorated with raised bands, full panel gilt designs and regal purple leather labels. Front cover illustrating James BondÕs hand, holding his skeleton grip Beretta, dressed in signature attire, a formal white shirt, gold monogram cufflink, his arm emerging from his black tuxedo jacket. A diamond is shot from from the gun with the cartridge casing thrown into the air. The gun and hand are carved three dimensionally and covered in natural calfskin and pewter lambskin. The shirt and jacket are also lambskin, with 14k gold plated cufflink embossed with JB. The diamond is just under 1/2 carat set in a 14k gold bezel cup secured under the leather. The bullet casing fits a .25 ACP cartridge. Back cover receives the bullet hole with a spray of faceted stones in a mist of varying sizes. A pre-publication copy (the date of release was 26th March 1956, and all the other Franklyn copies we purchased at the same time were presented before publication). William Plomer (1903-73), was a senior reader at Jonathan Cape Ltd., and one of Fleming's most trusted friends. He was instrumental in getting Casino Royale published and read and advised on each successive Fleming manuscript. He was unofficially Fleming's Editor-in Chief, and the novel Goldfinger is dedicated to him [Gilbert, p.650]. This is the first edition, first printing of Ian Fleming's fourth James Bond novel, Diamonds are Forever. The book was published by Jonathan Cape in London on March 26, 1956. The book tracks 007 as he infiltrates the deadly world of diamond smuggling, tracking smugglers from Sierra Leone to the United States. Fleming wrote the story at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica, inspired by a Sunday Times article on diamond smuggling. As with the three previous Bond books, the first edition of 12,500 copies sold out quickly. The novel was serialized in The Daily Express newspaper in April 1956 onwards. It was the first novel Fleming sold to the newspaper, a decision that led to an overall rise in the novel's sales. Book sales were also assisted by the press in November 1956, following the visit of Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden to Fleming's Goldeneye estate to recuperate following the Suez Crisis. In 1971, Diamonds Are Forever was produced for the big screen, starring Sean Connery and Guy Hamilton. Ian Fleming (19081964) was an intelligence officer, journalist, and creator of the fictional British Secret service agent James Bond. Beginning in 1939 he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels. After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success, and Fleming wrote a new book each year until his untimely death in 1964. The jacket design depicts Bond's love interest and a major player in the book, Tiffany Case; designer Pat Marriott would follow a similar formula in depicting the love interest, Honeychile Rider, on the jacket of DR. NO. This early Bond novel also contains the first mention of the name "Spectre," which would morph in later books into the organization of the spy's great nemesis, Ernst Blofeld. 7.25'' x 4.75''.
