First Edition
hardcover. First Edition. 2 lithographic plates. 184 pages + ads. 8vo, bound in modern marbled boards with leather spine label; text browned. Philadelphia: Key & Biddle, 1836. Cushing G 196. Reynolds 1632. A fine work by America's then leading expert on the subject. By 1836, Gerhard (1809-1872) was already recognized as one of Louis' most brilliant American students and as a leading authority in his own right. The work became the basis of part of Gerhard's clinical lectures on the subject at the university of Penn., where he has been described as a very sought after teacher in the field. He is the author of the most authoritative American work on diseases of the chest (1842) prior to Flint. (Garrison). This copy belonged to Henry Massie Bullitt (1817- 1880), teacher of medicine at St. Louis Medical College, and elsewhere. Bullitt taught in five medical schools, two of which he founded.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. spotted sheep. xv, (1), (9) - 183, (1, explanation of plates) pp. Two lithographed plates. Browned as usual; but, a very good copy. William Wood Gerhard's (1809-72) greatest contribution to medical science was his distinction between typhoid and typhus fevers (1836, G-M 5024). After obtaining his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania (1830), he did his postgraduate study in Paris principally under Pierre Louis. Appropriately he dedicates his book on physical diagnosis, the first American book on auscultation, to Louis. Though his 'Diseases of the chest' (1842) is well known, the present earlier work seems to have received little notice by medical writers. ".an early and very successful treatise on physical diagnosis." (R.H. Major, 'Hist. med.', p.759). Cushing G196. Reynolds 1632 (wrong date). Blocker Coll., p.156. Cordasco 30-0347. Not in the Bedford Catalog.
