Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. Symeon Shimin (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Not a bad combination Madeleine L'Engle & Symeon Shimin. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They look pretty good. They have slight darkening around the margins. The edges and corners are in very good shape. Same with the spine ends. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, nicely tight pages, no binding issues. The inside covers and end papers, front and rear form the same illustration. Both are perfectly clean and unworn. There is a penned inscription at the top corner of the front illustrated end paper. It gets a little lost in the colors (not a bad thing) but one can still make out 'Merry Christmas, 1969, from Uncle Niles (?).' There is no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. The pages are in top-notch condition, perfectly clean, no creasing of any kind, no markings, no attachments. The illustrations are dramatic and unusual. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It is very clean. You can see that the color got changed just adjacent to the front middle edge. Note that the light at the top and bottom edges is just glare coming off the top edges of the plastic protective cover. The jacket's imperfections are slight, scuffing at the tips of the corners and top and bottom edges of the spine, also a small tear off the bottom edge at the juncture between the front and spine (that tear is pretty well concealed by the protective cover). The flaps are white. They are clean and unworn. However the top of the front flap is clipped and the price is gone. The rear cover looks pretty good. There is a 1/2 inch closed tear off its bottom edge. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. As you likely know, Madeleine L'Engle won the Newbery Medal in 1963 for her A Wrinkle in Time. Symeon Shimin 'has exhibited at the Whitney Museum Of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.' Dance In The Desert was the first book he illustrated in full color. Dance in the Dark 'is a story in which the miraculous and near-miraculous freely happen. And an unstated time, long, long ago when the world we know was young, a father, a mother, and their infant son searched for a caravan to join so that they might safely cross the desert. For a family alone there was much to fear in the desert--- ferocious animals, venomous snakes, marauding bandits----and the protection of a caravan was very necessary. This, then, is the story of the wondrous things that happened "the night in the desert when nobody was afraid and everybody danced.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Symeon Shimin (illustrator). 1st Edition. This unusual and universally admired book is one of those works that, if you have to describe it as a children's picture book, you really have to put quotation marks around the words "children's picture book" to signify that it is so much more than that. A book to be appreciated by anyone of any age. And appreciated as much for the illustrations of Symeon Shimin as for the haunting text. These pictures are deceptively simple at first glance - done in the duo-tones of firelight and shadow - but the more you look at them the more you become amazed, not only at the painterly skill of the artist, but at a mysterious intensity that flows from them. This guy (or rather that guy - he died in 1984) can sure draw animals. See his work on such books as "Young Kangaroo" by Margaret Wise Brown, and Carol Fenner's "Gorilla Gorilla" for further evidence of this. Anyway, good stuff. I usually see this book listed as being in blue cloth, but this first edition copy is in a glorious orange cloth, which suits very well the cast light of the night fire that features in the illustrations. There is an inscription on the front endpaper, which is all but hidden by the artwork, and a small bookshop label on the pastedown. Otherwise a fine copy in a very good dust jacket indeed, price-clipped, slightly faded on spine panel, and with just minor wear to spine ends.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Shimin, Symeon (illustrator). [45 pages], first edition. The jacket is chipped along the edges, and the back creased along the head. There is a presentation sticker to the Primary School on the front end paper; neat accession numbers on the title page and again on the back flap, all very neat and unobtrusive, and a library pocket on the back end paper, which also suffers from water staining along its edge. The last few pages suffer from light damp waving. The half title page has been neatly overwritten with a blue biro and one page has a faded library stamp at its head. The faults are not seriously horrific. The pages are clean and the pictures and print sharp. Dance in the Desert "Describes an encounter in the desert when the animals came to a caravan campfire and danced with a child because fear was absent.".
