First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Andre Francois (illustrator). 1st Edition. [1955]. 10.5 x 3.25 inches (26.5 x 8.5 cm). Pictorial boards, previous owner's address label removed, but left two rectangular marks on title page and opposing page, occasional light foxing, 2 pages with small abrasions, original slip case with a few specks of paint residue, one edge with 4-inch split. An absurd poem with the intent to teach the reader the meaning of the phrase "Crocodile tears." It is wonderful and original in its conception and until its publication, completely unique in execution in the realm of children's books. It was considered by both the creator and publisher to be an art object more than a book. This original edition consisted of only 3000 copies, preceded by publication in Neuf magazine. It was immediately popular and followed up with a dual-language and enlarged English-language edition. (Bibliotheque National de France). Size: Narrow Oblong 8vo.

Long, narrow hardcover (10.5 x about 3.25 inches) with original mailing carton that has a window for the crocodile's snout to be visible. Some age-speckling to the white background, slightly darkened area consistent with the mailing box window, one inch tape repair to the bottom of the rear cover, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages with some minor age-toning to the first and last pages, no names or other markings. The mailing box has some old tape marks to the far end (tape has long ago fallen off), minor soil, French stamps but no postmark.
