First edition, 1951. Hardback. xvi, 278pp plus publisher's ads at end. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. The natural history of an English country parish was one of ther first subjects that suggested themselves when the New Naturalist series was planned. Being chiefly farmland and therefore practically all man-made, most country parishes are extremely complex from the naturalist's point of view and also inevitably contain a vast amount of human history. Any attempt to describe their plants and animals has to be closely related with the ways of man himself, who must be regarded as the chief element in the community - a fact obvious to naturalists since the days of Gilbert White. Arnold Boyd had lived in Cheshire all his life - in the parish of Antrobus, part of the old parish of Great Budworth, the character of which is typical of much of the Cheshire Plain. In keeping with the best tradition of amateur naturalists he excelled as a collector of facts and by weaving these together he has created a book of remarkable unity and which shows a grasp of every aspect of a living community. This charming and erudite portrait will surely protect his beloved parish from the ravages of human forgetfulness. 34 colour photographs, 49 black & white photographs and 9 text figures. Jacket design by Clifford and Rosemary Webb. Book in very good condition. A little spotting to text block edges and to endpapers. Very slight toning to endpapers. Book has a faint musty odour but no evidence of damp damage. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. Very slight edge wear. Some light discolouration and a little spotting. Book.
