CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author, John Headley, served under both Forrest and Morgan; from 1864 to the end he was in the Confederate Secret Service, operating from Canada with Hines, Martin, Beall and Young, in many questionable and hazardous enterprises, including an attempt to burn down New York City. He initially enlisted in Company K, Kentucky 1st Cavalry Regiment on 23 Oct 1861. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant. Mustered out on 23 Oct 1862. REFERENCES: KRICK 207: "Two-thirds of this volume deals with the subject matter identified on its title page. A substantial portion, however, pertains to Headley's experiences during the first three years of the war, during which he engaged in much cavalry adventuring. Headley escaped from Fort Donelson with Forrest's column, then fought at Perryville. There is emphasis on Federal depredations and atrocities. In 1864, Headley was sent to Canada. His own exciting clandestine activities are chronicled in conjunction with the broader picture of Confederate operations in general. The case of John Yates Beall and the plot to spring prisoners from Johnson's Island are among the subjects covered.".
