First Edition
Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] [1] 2-304 + 38-page publisher's catalogue dated "May 1909" inserted at rear, green cloth stamped in gold (Times binding). First edition. "Metaphysical romance; female occultist accidentally invokes and is possessed by an ethereal spirit; through various trials and tribulations, she gains visions of higher beauty, while the 'Watcher' within experiences corporeal life. Talky, with frequent interior dialogues on aesthetics, religion, etc., but the concepts are occasionally interesting. The author is better known for her nonfiction writings on mysticism. This novel is dedicated to Arthur Machen and his wife, and his influence (especially THE HILL OF DREAMS) is clearly evident; this book, in turn, inspired Charles Williams' metaphysical thrillers in the 1930s." - Robert Knowlton. See Blain, Grundy and Clements, The Feminist Companion to Literature in English, pp. [1105]-6Bleiler (1978), p. 197. Not in Reginald. Not in the Eaton catalogue. Times Book Club "Permanent Library" copy with their book label on the front paste-down and small book label on rear paste-down. Cloth rubbed and a bit spotted, a sound, very good copy. (#172028).
