Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of this fascinating work on city development by Patrick Geddes. A first edition of this fascinating work on city development by Patrick Geddes. With one folding map to the front, and a folding plate to the rear. Geddes is best known for his contribution urban planning philosophies, in which he combined his background in biology, sociology, and geography in his concepts of city design. A keen advocate of nature conservation and strong opponent of environmental pollution, some historians have claimed him as a forerunner of modern Green politics. The present volume focusses specifically on parks, gardens, nature reserves, and museums, before considering the life and sense of citizenship these urban spaces can create. There is evidence that a bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front endpaper, 'H. Wooler'. Added in pencil beneath, it reads 'Paddington Technical Institute, Saltan Crescent. W'. With an institutional date stamp to the front endpaper. In the publisher's original cream cloth binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, which has discoloured a little. Very lightly bumped to the tail of the spine, more so to the head, which has a chip in the cloth and is starting to fray. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light handling marks, pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
