Charles Rennie Mackintosh est né le 7 juin 1868 à Glasgow et mort le 10 décembre 1928 à Londres. C'était un architecte, concepteur écossais, faisant partie du mouvement Arts and Crafts et le principal porte-parole de l'Art nouveau en Écosse. Né à Glasgow, il étudie l'architecture auprès de John Hutchinson mais il suit des cours du soir à l'école d'art de Glasgow. C'est là qu'il fait la connaissance de Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh (qu'il épouse en 1900), sa sur Frances MacDonald et Herbert McNair. Ce groupe d'artistes, connu sous le nom de « The Four », expose à Liège pour la première fois en 1895, à Glasgow, Londres (Arts and Crafts Society en 1896) et Vienne. Ces expositions contribuent à établir la réputation de Mackintosh. Le style, surnommé « Glasgow », se fait connaître en Europe à travers des expositions, et il est particulièrement bien reçu par la Sécession viennoise lors de l'exposition organisée par celle-ci à Vienne en 1900. Il rejoint le cabinet d'architectes Honeyman & Keppie en 1889 et développe son propre style où s'opposent angles droits et motifs décoratifs d'inspiration florale avec des courbes douces, par exemple le motif dit de la Rose Mackintosh, et auquel s'intègrent des références à l'architecture écossaise traditionnelle. Le projet qui contribue à élever sa réputation à un rang international est la Glasgow School of Art (1897-1909). Mackintosh travaille aussi comme décorateur d'intérieur et créateur de meubles, de textiles et de ferronnerie. La plus grande partie de son travail mélange son style propre à celui de sa femme, plus souple et floral, rehaussant ainsi son travail plus formel et rectiligne. Comme son contemporain Frank Lloyd Wright, les projets architecturaux de Mackintosh comportent souvent des indications importantes concernant les détails de la décoration et du mobilier de ses immeubles.
