First American Edition stated, first printing. Last date on copyright page is 1939; and a DJ reference to this edition being the first American publication coming twenty plus years after the first English edition. A most collectible title in children's literature thanks in part to legend; as the UK publisher was decimated in The Blitz, having their inventory and original plates destroyed. True or not is up for debate; yet this edition is definitively the First American Edition. The book is bright, tight and clean. Illustrated yellow panels are bright and clean. Endpapers and pages are bright and clean. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Foot and crown of backstrip gently pushed (barely.) Original uncommon DJ with $3.50 price intact on flap. One open chip at crown shoulder.DJ shows a couple of small faint marks and light soiling. A very nice first printing in DJ. NF/VG.
