During the 1930s, Mussolini dominated in his relationship with Hitler. But during the 1940s, the WWII years, the tables were dramatically reversed, Hitler was in the driver's seat. Militarily, the Italians were weak, and were repeatedly embarrassed: in North Africa & Greece and each time had to be rescued by Germany's war machine. The Italians could not maintain a successful campaign on their own. In the end, Mussolini was personally rescued by the Germans in 1943, and Italy became a battlefield and a puppet state. This work focuses, almost exclusively, on the 1940s political relationship between the two dictators.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Purdie, Andrea (cover design) (illustrator). Fine unread condition black-and-white photographic softcover wraps. Includes About the Author; List of Other Books by F.W. Deakin; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote; Preface; Acknowledgments; Bibliography; Appendix: Italian Documents Captured by the Germans; Notes; and Index. "Thsi is a detailed account of the Fascist regime in Italy after the hammer blows of Alamein, the landings in French North Africa, and Stalingrad, and of the stages leading to the dramatic downfall of Mussolini after an all-night session of the Fascist Grand Council in July, 1943. The narrative then traces Mussolini's return to power as head of a puppet satellite Nazi republic in the North after his abduction from internment by SS paratroopers in September, and then follows the dictator's fate through the Six Hundred Days of the final disintegration of Fascism. Using source materials ranging from summit conference records on the Axis side to private correspondence, police files and spy reports, the author throws fascinating light on how Mussolini ran his government, his relations with leaders, his handling of subordinates and above all his 'brutal friendship' with Hitler." - from the rear outer cover. "The Brutal Friendsiop massive, impersonal and enthralling, is not only an important contribution to recent history, but an example of how to write it." - John Hale, Sunday Telegraph. "This is a very fine piece of writing and . it makes enthralling reading." - Times Literary Supplement.
