Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Jacket design by Jon McIntosh (illustrator). 1st Edition. "First Edition" stated. Author Bergman appears to actually know a fair amount about what was going on in 1944. It appears reviewers, mystery readers, and even his own publisher held this against him -- after all, hard-boiled detective fiction is supposed to take place in some kind of netherworld that never really existed, right? No one is supposed to run into Tom Dewey . . . or a live radio broadcast from the Empire State Building. Not price clipped; original $6.95 ($6.95?!) price showing. Bergman's dissertation for his 1970 Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin was published in 1971 by NYU Press under the title "We're in the Money: Depression America and Its Films." "The Big Kiss-Off" was his first of three "hard-bitten" Jack LeVine novels. He wrote the screenplays for Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and "Fletch" (with Chevy Chase) in 1985, "The Freshman," starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick (1990), "Honeymoon in Vegas," starring Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker (1992), and "Striptease," with Demi Moore, 1996. Totals 194 pp., reduced from $22.
