Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Many people consult a barometer before going out, to see what the weather is likely to be. Barometers measure the general pressure of the atmosphere, which changes with the weather: falling pressure generally heralds rain; rising pressure predicts fine weather. The simple mercury barometer originated in seventeenth century Italy and was soon copied in France and Britain. In the nineteenth century demand increased for domestic and scientific barometers. They were needed for weather forecasting, and surveyors carried them to measure height above sea level. Since 1850, mercury barometers have been gradually ousted by aneroids, which are smaller and more robust but nowadays equally accurate. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## BAROMETERS: Many people keep a barometer in the house and consult it before going out to see what the weather will likely be. Barometers measure the general pressure of the atmosphere, which changes with the weather. Falling pressure generally heralds rain, and rising pressure predicts fine weather. The simple mercury barometer originated in seventeenth-century Italy and was copied in France and Britain. Scientific academies had the first barometers made, and then eighteenth-century artisans fitted them into beautiful pieces of furniture. In the nineteenth century, demand increased for domestic and scientific barometers of all types. They were needed for weather forecasting; surveyors carried them to measure height above sea level. Since 1850, mercury barometers have gradually been ousted by the smaller and more robust aneroids, which are nowadays equally accurate. ## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. First published as a Shire Album 1988, second edition 1994, reprinted 1998 and 2003. Glossy laminated coloured cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight and the inside pages are immaculate. ## ## Barometers - Many people consult a barometer before going out, to see what the weather is likely to be. Barometers measure the general pressure of the atmosphere, which changes with the weather: falling pressure generally heralds rain; rising pressure predicts fine weather. The simple mercury barometer originated in seventeenth-century Italy and was soon copied in France and Britain. In the nineteenth century demand increased for domestic and scientific barometers. They were needed for weather forecasting, and surveyors carried them to measure height above sea level. Since 1850 mercury barometers have been gradully ousted by aneroids, which are smaller and more robust but nowadays equally accurate. ## ## During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries no serious expedition set out without a barometer. At the summit of Mont Blanc pressure is barely 576 mb; in the Andes and Himalayas it falls much lower. Mountain barometers, therefore, need a longer scale than their domestic relatives and cisterns large enough to contain the falling mercury. ## ## By the 1860s weather reports could be telegraphed to central offices, enabling pressure changes associated with settled weather, rain, etc, to be charted across the country. Forecasting became a realistic proposition, and the barometer its principal tool. ## ## Admiral Fitzroy, a naval hydrographer at the Board of Trade, designed a 'fishery barometer', which by 1858 was displayed at every port to warn fishermen and other sailors of approaching bad weather. Many of these can still be seen in harbourmasters' offices and such places. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ### Shire Publications are a series of books that have grown from 32, 64 pages and more depending on the subject. These books offer a wealth of information, social history and local history, and other books that aren't available could be lost. New authors and new and varied subjects are always well written and researched. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles. In December 2010, Osprey Publishing, along with all the Shire titles, was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
