Der dies äußert, ist der ehrenwerte Mr. Panofsky himself, ein alter Jude aus Montreal, der ein mittleres Vermögen gemacht hat mit Import/Export (von französischem Käse bis hin zu ägyptischen Grabbeigaben) , dann mit der Produktion von unaussprechlich schlechten Seifenopern. Barneys "wahre Geschichte seines vergeudeten Lebens" ist zugleich die seiner drei Ehefrauen. Da ist Clara Chambers, die er aus Versehen heiratet, Dichterin, Malerin, Nymphomanin und Kleptomanin, die postum zu einer Ikone des amerikanischen Feminismus wird. Es folgt eine jüdisch-kanadische Prinzessin, durchweg bezeichnet als "die zweite Mrs. Panofsky". Miriam, die dritte, ist die richtige, aber nach 30 Ehejahren hat auch sie die Nase voll von ihrem saufenden, hemmungslos schwadronierenden, fremdgehenden, ordinären, dreckschleudernden Barney. Überdies wird er verdächtigt, nach einem Saufgelage seinen besten Freund umgebracht zu haben, und er hat, nach zahllosen Maltwhiskeys und kubanischen Zigarren, zunehmend Probleme mit dem Herzen, der Prostata und vor allem mit dem Gedächtnis. (Wie hießen, nur zum Beispiel, noch mal die Sieben Zwerge?) Daher korrigiert Barneys pedantischer Sohn mittels Fußnoten getreulich die falschen Angaben in Barneys Manuskript - beginnender Alzheimer heißt die Erklärung, die sich erst gegen Ende einstellt, kurz vor dem überraschenden Schluß. Mit Gewinn gelesen hat Eva-Elisabeth-Fischer diese "groteske Autobiografie", die sich der bekannte kanadische Autor über Barney Panofsky hat einfallen lassen. Als verkrachter Künstler in Paris, später Fernsehproduzent, dreimal verheiratet und schließlich im New York der neunziger Jahre "der fortschreitenden Alzheimer-Krankheit seine Erinnerungen" abringend wird er vorgeführt. Und es gibt sogar ein Thriller-Element, einen unaufgeklärten Mord an Barneys Freund Boogie, der drogensüchtig war und den der Ich-Erzähler womöglich selbst umgebracht hat. Aber alles das ist am Ende nur Gerüst für die endlosen Schimpf- und Hasstiraden des geistig nicht besonders beweglichen Barney, der aber deswegen dennoch zu allem und jedem eine Meinung hat, vor allem auch zu Literaturbetrieb und politischer Korrektheit. Hier hat sich der Autor "eine besonders hässliche Maske übergezogen", meint die Rezensentin, und verführt darin geschickt den Leser zur Freude an der "Perfidie". -- Mordecai Richler (* 27. Januar 1931 in Montreal; 3. Juli 2001 ebenda) war ein kanadischer Schriftsteller, Drehbuchautor und Essayist. Zu Lebzeiten gehörte er zu den bekanntesten kanadischen Schriftstellern weltweit. In Kanada selbst war er darüber hinaus durch seine Äußerungen zur kanadischen Politik eine nicht unumstrittene Figur des öffentlichen Lebens. Leben: Richler stamme aus einer jüdischen Familie und war Sohn eines Schrotthändlers. Die Nachbarschaft, in welcher er in Montreal aufwuchs, verewigte er später in mehrerern seiner Romane. Er begann ein Englisch-Studium an der Sir George Williams University (jetzt Concordia University), exmatrikulierte sich jedoch, bevor er einen Abschluss erlangt hatte. Im Alter von 19 Jahren zog Richler nach Paris, wo er einige Jahre lebte, bevor er nach London zog. 1972 kehrte er nach Montreal zurück, verbrachte jedoch weiterhin regelmäßig die Wintermonate in London. Mit seinem vierten, 1959 erschienenen, Roman The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (unter dem Titel Die Lehrjahre des Duddy Kravitz erst im Februar 2007 erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung erschienen) gelang Richler der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller.
