First edition. Signed by the author. Hardcover. Fine in pictorial boards as issued. A juvenile story of two girls: Jo, a modern teenager, and Balyet, an Aboriginal girl-spirit of the mountains, frozen in time by an ancient curse. Wrightson has grafted a modern story onto the legend of Balyet, first recorded by Mrs Ethel Hassell in the 1880s, and first published from her manuscript in 1975, in a book called "My Dusky Friends". This copy inscribed by the author on the fly-leaf, "Best wishes to ______, Patricia Wrightson". The US edition of this title is common, and the UK version quite scarce.
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION 1989, 8vo, white shiny boards with coloured illustration to upper cover, 102 pages. No illustrations. Set in Australia and based on a legend, Balyet is a beautiful Aboriginal girl-spirit of the mountains who due to an ancient curse lives permanently in isolation, longing for a companion. Jo a modern teenager cannot pay the price of accepting Balyet's offer of friendship. Minute bump to top of spine, no inscriptions. A Fine copy, issued without dustwrapper. Wrightson is one of the leading Australian writers for children in the post-war era and has won numerous awards. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST.
