Jahrhunderts wirkten in Italien mehrere Landkartenverleger, die häufig in einer Person auch Zeichner, Stecher und Kartendrucker waren; die bekanntesten sind Gastaldi in Venedig (um 1500-1565), Lafreri in Rom (1512-1577), Tramezini in Rom (tätig 1538-1562) und Camocio in Venedig (tätig 1558-1572). Durch diese Universalisten wurden Venedig und Rom zu Zentren der "modernen" italienischen Landkartenproduktion (nachdem bereits zwei Generationen zuvor die ersten Ptolemaios-Karten in Italien publiziert worden waren). Die von Gastaldi et al. geschaffenen Landkarten waren ausschließlich Einzelblätter, die auf Wunsch von Kunden in unterschiedlichsten Sammelbänden vereint wurden; somit hat jeder dieser Bände eine andere Zusammensetzung. Von Lafreri beispielsweise ist bekannt, daß er in seinem Verkaufskatalog mehr als 500 Landkartenblätter verzeichnete. Diese italienischen Sammelatlanten unterschiedlicher Herausgeber werden oft summarisch unter dem Begriff "Lafreri-Atlas" zusammengefasst - etwa 70 derartige Bände sind bis heute in verschiedenen öffentlichen und privaten Kartensammlungen erhalten geblieben. Es muß als Glücksfall bezeichnet werden, daß im Jahre 1999 auf einer Auktion ein weiterer vergleichbarer Sammelband angeboten, von den Antiquaren Gebrüder Haas (Bedburg-Hau) sowie Le Bail und Weissert (Paris) gemeinsam erworben und vom besten deutschen Kenner der Renaissance-Kartographie, Peter H. Meurer, in der vorliegenden Faksimile-Edition kommentiert worden ist. Dieser Sammelatlas besteht aus 191 Kupferstichen auf 164 Blättern; davon stammen 110 Karten von Gastaldi, 56 Stadtansichten oder Pläne und 10 weitere Darstellungen von verschiedenen Autoren, 4 (bisher unbekannte) Karten zeichnete wiederum Gastaldi nach Vorgaben von Ptolemaios und 11 weitere nach dem antiken Geographen Strabo. Diese 15 "antiken" Karten waren vermutlich für eine nicht veröffentliche italienische Ausgabe der "Geographia" des Ptolemaios bestimmt - und der Name Strabo stand schließlich Pate für die Benennung der vorliegenden Faksimile-Edition. Der Sammelband enthält u.a. folgende Karten: Welt (von Cimerlin, Forlani), Afrika, Europa (Forlani, Camocio), Atlantik (Forlani), Island (Bertelli), Asien, verschiedene europäische Länder - vornehmlich am Mittelmeer, Nord- und Ostsee (Camocio), Gotland (Bertelli), Bayern (Forlani), Polen/Litauen (Nelli, Forlani); unter den Stadtansichten sind zu nennen: Sebenico, Valetta, Antwerpen, Calais, Bordeaux, Lyon, Tokaj, Rhodos, Augsburg, Gotha, München, Frankfurt/M., Milano, Siena, Napoli, Roma, Thionville, Genève, Kairo, Algier u.a. Jeder Kupferstich ist verkleinert abgebildet und mit einem ausführlichen Kommentar sowie mit Hinweisen auf die jeweilige Quelle bzw. Vorlage versehen. Auch wenn die Druckqualität der Bilder gelegentlich Wünsche offen lässt, muß der vorliegende Band als hervorragendes Beispiel editorisch-bibliographischer Arbeit gewertet werden. Sprache: Deutsch.
