Cloth, gilt cover device, folio, 235 pp, including 145 ills (24 in colour). . Rosenblum: "A beautifully illustrated survey of illuminated manuscripts from late classical antiquity to the Renaissance. The volume begins with a quick overview of the period, referring the reader to specific plates. These 145 full-page reproductions are followed by notes discussing the manuscripts and the specific examples depicted. Includes bibliographic references. Connoisseur regarded this volume as 'a thoroughly useful and sensibly arranged introduction to the subject' ". The illustrations include not only pages from many great and familiar Bibles, l'salters, Gospel Books and Books of Hours, but also less well-known illustrations which are often profoundly imaginative and pictorially exciting. The choice of plates extends from the graceful early Byzantine illustrations and the more monumental Carolingian folios, to the late and ornate pages painted by 16th century Italian artists. There are examples of English, Irish, German, Austrian, Flemish, French, Italian and Spanish illumination, some shown in enlarged details Very Good in a marked dustwrapper laminated with plastic protection.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First English Edition as published by Phaidon in 1969 (originally published in Italian). The condition of both book and dust-jacket is 'Near Fine'. The light blue cloth covers have spine titles in gilt and a gilt image of a medieval angel on the front cover. Size of book in inches is: 12.1 x 9.0. As you would expect, this book is beautifully illustrated with some 145 illustrations, 24 of them in full colour. The two authors were specialists in the field and their thoughts seem to have been translated well. As background, high quality medieval illustrations in manuscripts and books by their nature tended to be miniatures and the authors' aim was to rescue the study and appreciation of these as they tended to be overlooked by art historians and it was difficult to obtain access to the original medieval manuscripts. So this book seems to have filled a rather important gap in art history. No additional postage charged for delivery within the UK.
