"The war of 1776-1783 shook the world, seeing in the establishment of the United States and ending the "first British Empire." This wide-ranging and comprehensive history of the war makes use of the latest research to tell the complete story. From the political origins of the conflict to the peace talks in Paris, the author offers a lively and authoritative account of the events. This book charts the course of the war across four continents. For, although it was a civil war, as well as a war for political independence, it grew to become a European war fought on a global scale. In many ways it can be seen as virtually a continuation of the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763), itself described as "the first world war". All the battles of the campaign are described - not just those on American soil.the book is beautifully illustrated throughout with more than two hundred paintings and etchings and detailed maps of the battles and campaigns.".
