No Binding. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. (Word Maps) Hanley, Miles L. (English Words their Pronunciation and Spelling Differences.) 11"x 8.5", 58 leaves. Mimeographed from typed originals. Present in two sections, staple-bound. GOOD copies. The first page of each section are pretty dusted, but the rest of the text is clean and bright. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their rubber stamp on the rear wrapper. Datelined "University of Wisconsin", June 20, 1935. This is an interesting collection of a longish list of 10,000 words and how they were spelled in x-number of private diaries throughout New England. It may be that this could form the basis of a U.S. Linguistic atlas. [++] Other, similar, works that Hanley produced include: "English and American pronunciation 16th to 18th centuries : as indicated by rimes and spellings"; "Linguistic atlas of New England, by Hansen and others, 1943 (?); "Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. Linguistic Atlas of New England" by Hanley and others.

Bookplate of Robert Leaming Montgomery. Montgomery (1879-1949) was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and was a "co-founder of the investment firm known today as Janney Montgomery Scott LLC. In 1913, he built Ardrossan on the Main Line, an estate of 800-acres where he was a conservationist and a dairy farmer with a prized herd of Ayrshire Cattle. He kept a pack of foxhounds and hunted with the Radnor Hunt. In later life, he developed a passion for aviation, helping to pioneer the autogyro" (househistree[dot]com). In the advertisement on the verso of the title, the author hopes for the need of an unabridged version of the same work, but as the dictionary "made little contribution to the development of lexicography in America," no other edition was published. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. New London, Connecticut: Samuel Green, 1795. First edition. Early American imprint (1795) with emphasis on American pronunciation of the English language. The author, in the preface, recognizes distinct regional differences even within the American mode of speech - "The pronunciation of the southern states of English America is almost as different from that of the New-England states, even among the learned, as any two dialects of the language of any illiterate nation can be supposed to be : and yet both those parts of America abound with men of bright genius, large mental capacities and profound learning". The author also recognizes the diaparity between the written and spoken English language, and attempts to teach new English readers a consistent method of pronunciation based on a system of rules set forth in the book. Paper covered wooden boards with calf spine, ix, (2), 12-119, (1)p., with the final page citing errata. Free endpapers absent, otherwise a complete copy with age-toned pages free from chips or tears other than one page with a 3mm internal chip toward the bottom barely affecting the text on one page. Externally worn, with the paper covering quite chipped and exposing the wood, front hinge cracked. This is most likely its original, inexpensive binding, in unrestored condition. Text block sound with no loosened pages. Old stamp from what may have been an academic library (not identified) on front pastedown. Rare. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 12mo (16 cm).
