Fascinating work in which Mukarovsky's theory indicates that norm is not statistical; rather, he proposes that cultural behavior, including artistic work, is always understood in relation to a norm that is established by its culture. However, movements of art that conform to social norms are relatively short and rare compared to movements that make their marks by violating them in some respect. The norm is known but not necessarily known explicitly. It is communicated among members of a culture by the ways values are assigned to works. Historically, the norm changes continually, and the interaction between the norm and the works that violate or confirm it are factors in its evolution. Slight age-toning on spine and along edges. Wraps in overall good, interior in very good condition.
