Jede Erzählung erhielt durch den Erzähler eine besondere Note, der sich frei vom geschriebenen Text entfernte, der seinerseits von Manuskript zu Manuskript in Aufbau und Struktur variiert. Eine illustrierte Version des Hamzanama wurde zu Beginn der Herrschaft des Mogulkaisers Akbar in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts von dem jugendlichen Kaiser selbst in Auftrag gegeben. Es besteht aus 1400 Gemälden in einem ungewöhnlich großen Format und ist eines der frühesten und vielleicht auch das ehrgeizigste Produkt des königlichen Mogulmalereiateliers. Die enorme Größe der Illustrationen, die jeweils fast einen Meter hoch sind, erklärt sich aus ihrer Rolle als Ergänzung zu den Rezitationen; ihr manchmal breiter und lebhafter Stil vermittelt die Lebendigkeit der Geschichten. Von den 1400 Gemälden, die Akbar in Auftrag gegeben hatte, ist heute nur noch etwas mehr als ein Zehntel erhalten. Die vorliegende Publikation der Abenteuer des Hamza versammelt 60 der besten dieser Werke aus Sammlungen in aller Welt und stellt sie neben neue Übersetzungen der entsprechenden Textpassagen.
