About this Item: Gloucester, 1st ed., 1988. Xiv + 134 pp., 95 photo-ills. D.j., 25 x 18cm. FINE. In September 1914 three West Countrymen joined the 2/5th Somerset Light Infantry, fully expecting to do their duty in France. Instead they were posted to India and Burma where they were to spend the whole of the war on garrison duties. When they returned to England five years later they had not fired a single shot in anger. This is their story. Narrative, diary and oral reminiscences interweave to create this account of three men in "C" Company the 2/5th Somersets, who were caught up so unawares in the ‘war to end all wars’. The book also draws heavily on Lord Montagu’s private papers which provide a rich visual history of military transport in India during the Great War. Complemented by over 100 previously unpublished, contemporary photographs, this book presents a new and unique angle from which to view the tragic years of the Great War. Seller Inventory # C126B328
