Book
hardcover, 6½" x 9¼", with dust jacket 308 pages Travel writer Eric Newby and his wife Wanda decided to explore Ireland on mountain bikes ('boikes', as the Irish call them). Lashed by winter storms and fuelled by a diet of Guinness, port and spam, they nevertheless found Ireland as rich and romantic as legend and history suggest. They stayed in B & Bs, visited the great horse fair, the haunts of saints and hermits, and climbed the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick; in short, they left few stones unturned. Great reading! Rear of jacket has repaired 2" tear. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The debates were between Rev. H. Cooke, Belfast, Rev. J. Richie, Edinburgh, Rev. J. Alexander, Belfast, Rev. Mr M'Ilwaine Ohio, Rev. Hugh M'Intyre, Loan Ends. 64 pp. half leather and marbled boards, with new spine and spine label, some minor rubbing, but overall in very good condition. Richie was leader of the Voluntaryism movement of Presbyterian clergy and laymen who believed that no church should accept Government grants, subsidies or endowments. Cooke did not agree though of course he opposed grants to Maynooth. One debate went on through the night and resumed next evening. Cooke spoke for 5 hours and Richie for three. The stamina of those audiences! Dr. Cooke's oratory and impassioned argument swept all before him. The pamphlet had a printing of 10.000 copies in all four editions, a huge number for such a work.

First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 64 pages; Seven individual issues from 1845 and one from 1847 of this American Quaker weekly journal edited by Robert Smith and printed by Joseph and William Kite, 50 N. Fourth Street, Philadelphia. Each issue is a single sheet folded into 8 printed pages (uncut); then folded into quarters horizontally, as originally mailed. Each issue bears the original owner's name signed at one edge -- "Elisha Roberts" or "E. Roberts." ELISHA ROBERTS (1818 - 1905) was a prominent Pennsylvania Quaker, the son of David and Rachel H. Roberts, who were superintendent and matron at Westtown Quaker school. Elisha too was a successful teacher for some years. In 1842, Elisha Roberts married Elizabeth W. Hooton, and settled on a farm near Moorestown. Being mechanically-minded, he was the first to introduce labor-saving mowing and reaping machines into his neighborhood. In the spring of 1864 he and his family relocated to the Westtown Farm House, where he introduced a number of innovations, including updating the dairy farm operations and accommodations. In 1866 Elisha's daughter Sarah Hooten Roberts (1843-1928) married Samuel Allen (1841-1918), a Quaker farmer, inventor, and manufacturer. He and Elisha Roberts formed S. L. Allen & Co., which produced innovative agricultural and gardening equipment, including some invented by Allen (who later invented the sled known as "The Flexible Flyer"). In the year 1868, when Atlantic City was in its infancy, Elisha Roberts built the "Chalfonte" hotel, which he and his family operated for many years. Elisha Roberts together with Eliza P. Gurney established a Friends' Meeting House in Atlantic City. Roberts travelled extensively throughout the United States, making three trips to California. He became quite an enthusiast for photography, developing and printing from his own negatives. His photography revealed his skills as an observer and admirer of nature. THE EDITOR: Robert Smith III (c. 1770-1851) of Burlington, New Jersey was descended from a long line of New Jersey Quakers. He was the first editor of The Friend and, like many Quakers, an abolitionist. His "Relics from the Past" - an homage to Warner Mifflin in issues of The Friend. All in Very Good condition, some toning. One issue has some tears along one fold CONTENTS: Includes articles such as Canton River, or River Tigris; The Magnetic Telegraph - Its Proposed Extension; the conclusion of Texas Slavery - J.C. Calhoun to W.R. King; The Camden Race Course; Bookselling after the Invention of Printing; Benjamin Banneker (in two parts); On the Cultivation of the Grape Vine (No. 2); On the Cultivation of the Grape Vine (No. 6); Making a Woman of an Indian Brave; etc. ; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated.

Leather-bound. Condition: Good Plus. First American Edition. 8vo. Full leather, with contrasting red title label to spine. Double ruled in gilt. 8-3/4 in. Includes prefaces to the first and second London editions of 1816 and 1817. Half title. Includes index. xix, [1], 335, [1] p. 22 cm. V-shaped dampstain at top centered on gutter visible throughout. Textblocks browned from ink with peripheral browning from damp. The author's observations on approximately one-hundred cases of gout. "In 1820 he was appointed physician to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Gotha.[1] He attended the novelist Ann Radcliffe at her death in 1823; surviving records have led to the suggestion that Scudamore's prescriptions worsened her condition." (ODNB). This copy from the library of M.L. Weems, M.D.,(and bearing his printed stamp atop the title page) probably the famous "Parson Weems", biographer of George Washington, William Penn,Francis Marion, and others, whom some say was somewhat more mythologizer and even hagiographer, than accurate recounter of biographical facts surrounding historical figures. He is the progenitor of the famed Chopping down the Cherry Tree story told about the youthful George Washington. "Mason Locke Weems (1759-1825), bookseller, author, and Episcopal clergyman.Having received medical training in London and at the University of Edinburgh prior to the Revolutionary War, he [underwent religious conversion and] returned to Great Britain after the conflict and was ordained into the Episcopal ministry in 1784. Weems served in two parishes in Maryland, 1784-92, before relocating to Dumfries, Virginia, in the mid-1790s. About that time he became an agent for the prominent Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey and, as such, spent the rest of his life traveling up and down the East Coast selling books. Following the publication of his famed biography of George Washington in 1800, a later edition of which included the oft-repeated cherry-tree story, Weems wrote biographies of Francis Marion, Benjamin Franklin, and William Penn, as well as a number of moralizing tracts." (National Historical Publications and Records Commission/National Archives).
