So I have to ask you to release me from our good tranquil hour this afternoon, and look forward to seeing you after the Lecture. But lookit, when do we get an unencumbered talk on books per se; writing as writing, I mean, not items? However I shall be back some day in Town not as a pro. talker. And it can happen then. Ever [signed]: Thornton Wilder Tues. a.m. [added in pencil: Cleveland-April 2 1929]. The letter shows a central horizontal fold from being folded for mailing, some light, age-related tanning. Dear Gladys: George Dillon:'Our habits are trained for writing a kind of poetry that in the face of calamities of the world seem even to ourselves a kind of parlor talk.' Habits, training & kinds of --have nothing to do with poetry. Poetry is telling one's truth and so catch your truth and tell it.
