In narrative terms, it's fairly slight: a sun-washed fairytale, delicious in its contrivance. But it's also a paean to the transformative power of travel. Four very different women respond to an advertisement in the Times appealing to "those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine" to rent a small medieval Italian castle for a month. Ref UUU 1.

This book is essential reading for anyone studying the history of the women's movement, or for anyone who is just merely interested. Immensely readable and without pretention, One Hand Tied Behind Us should be added to anyone's collection. One Hand Tied Behind Us blows apart the popular myth that the sole arbiters of the Suffrage Movement were the upper and middle classes. It shows that the Pankhursts, whilst important in their way, were not the main contributors in the fight to gain the vote for women. Centred around the textile industry were large numbers of women who were active in the Trade Union and Labour Movement. These were the women who, through hard work and determination, gained the respect and support of those men who would have to be influenced if the vote was to be won. The book also points out very successfully that the vote was not the be all and end all of the campaign as far as working class women were concerned. Their campaigns for employment rights and equality of opportunity were equally important, and in some ways it was far harder to achieve success in these fields, however they did succeed. Ref EEE3.

How should we live: how should we care for one another; grow our capabilities to work, to learn, to love and fully realize our potential? This exciting and ambitious book shows how we can re-design the welfare state for this century. The welfare state was revolutionary: it lifted thousands out of poverty, provided decent homes, good education and security. But it is out of kilter now: an elaborate and expensive system of managing needs and risks. Today we face new challenges. Our resources have changed. Hilary Cottam takes us through five 'Experiments' to show us a new design. We start on a Swindon housing estate where families who have spent years revolving within our current welfare systems are supported to design their own way out. We spend time with young people who are helped to make new connections - with radical results. We turn to the question of good health care and then to the world of work and see what happens when people are given different tools to make change. Then we see those over sixty design a new and affordable system of support. At the heart of this way of working is human connection. Upending the current crisis of managing scarcity, we see instead that our capacities for the relationships that can make the changes are abundant. We must work with individuals, families and communities to grow the core capabilities we all need to flourish. Radical Help describes the principles behind the approach, the design process that makes the work possible and the challenges of transition. It is bold - and above all, practical. It is not a book of dreams. It is about concrete new ways of organizing that already have been developing across Britain. Radical Help creates a new vision and a radically different approach that can take care of us once more, from cradle to grave. Ref Y6.

The text block is unmarked, tight, white, bright and square. In "The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne" (1789), the naturalist Gilbert White returns repeatedly to a question of escape: in winter, where do the swallows go? Do they migrate ? or hibernate? In White's lifetime, the question remained unanswered, at least among European naturalists. In his journals and letters, White duly took note of the annual sightings of these escapist birds. Some 150 years later, another writer with a deep love of nature, Sylvia Townsend Warner, observed a connection between White's atttempts to solve the mystery of the vanishing swallows and a creature that he knew could not fly away, but would instead bury itself in the flowerbeds of his garden: a tortoise called Timothy. In Portrait of a Tortoise (1946), Warner records how White kept one eye on Timothy's efforts to escape the winter weather and another on the "hirondelles" (swallows). Could the tortoise help him to solve the mystery of the migrating or hibernating birds? To Warner's delight, and White's consternation, Timothy also managed to escape White's garden at other times of year, despite his uncertain but allegedly considerable age: apparently, he was in search of a mate. Book
softcover, 6" x 9" 386 pages This book is a remarkable record of nearly twenty years at the centre of British intellectual and political life. Beatrice Webb tells of her girlhood, of her painful adolescence and her attempts to bring meaning for her life, vividly describing her work as a young woman in London's East End. Most revealing of all is the account of her obsessive and self-thwarted passion for Joseph Chamberlain and of the troubled courtship which lead to her marriage to Sidney Webb and the beginning of that famous partnership. Thirty-nine b&w photographs. Book in VERY GOOD condition.
