Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. X, 241 pages. 214 x 155 mm. Peretz (Peter) Smolenskin (Peretz ben Moshe Smolenski) (?1842 Monastyrshchina,Mogilev Governorate, Russian Empire, in present-day Smolensk Oblast, Russia - February 1, 1885 Merano, Italy), was part of the Haskalah movement, and the founder and editor of a literary Hebrew language journal Ha-Shachar, (The Dawn.) He also wrote several novels and short stories in Hebrew and strengthened a nationalistic Haskalah movement in partnership with Zionism. His family came from Smolensk. His older brother was seized by the Czar's army and never returned. His father, falsely accused of a crime, was a fugitive for over two years and died when Peretz was eleven. At the age of 12, he left home to study at yeshiva for five years. He began reading secular books and learning Russian under the influence of the Haskalah movement. He traveled through southern Russia and the Crimea, supporting himself by singing in choirs and preaching in synagogues. In 1862 he settled in Odessa where he studied music and languages, taught Hebrew and, in 1867, published his first story. He traveled through Romania, Germany and Bohemia, acquired Turkish nationality, and in Vienna he founded a Hebrew journal that became a literary platform for the Haskalah movement and the early Jewish nationalist movement. He was stricken with tuberculosis in 1883 and died two years later. He was a strong voice for Jewish nationalism and his Hebrew periodical, The Dawn (Ha-shahar), was very influential. Shortly before his death he was associated with Laurence Oliphant and became deeply interested in schemes for the colonization of Palestine. Smolenskin was among the first of Jewish nationalists to disassociate Messianic ideals from theological concomitants. His six novels create a kaleidoscope of Jewish life in which he rejects the notion of the westernized Jew. His works: Hebrew: The Joy of the Goddess, Vienna, (Simchat Hanef) Ha-Shachar, 1872. Burial of the Ass Vienna, (Kevurat Hamor) Ha-Shachar, 1873. Pride and Fall, Vienna, (Ga'on Va-Shever) Ha-Shahar, 1874. The Reward of the Righteous, Vienna, Ha-Shahar, (Gemul Yesharim)1875. The Wanderer in the Paths of Life, Vienna, (Ha-toeh be-darkhe ha-Hayyim) is the story of an orphan, Joseph, and his life in the ghetto. Ha-Shachar, 1876. The Inheritance (Ha-yerusha), depicts life in Odessa and Romania. 1877-1884. Collected Works, Vilna, Katzenelbogen, (Col Sifrei Peretz Smolenskin) 1901. One Hundred Letters, Vilna, Katzenelbogen, (Meah Michtavim)1905. The Reward, Vilna, Katzenelbogen, (Meah Michtavim)1910. Articles, Smolenskin Foundation, (Ma'amarim) 1926. Selected Stories & Articles, Dvir, (Mivhar Sipurim Ve-Ma'amarim) 1941. Yiddish: The Wanderer in the Paths of Life, Warsaw, Sefer, 1927.

Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. In Hebrew. 114 pages. 190 x 143 mm. Title page is in Hebrew and Russian. WorldCat: Libraries worldwide that own item: 3. Pages are browned and brittle. New hardcover binding by a master bookbinder. Isaac Rumsch was a russian teacher and Hebrew author, born in the village of Zezemer,Wilnius District, April 6, 1822; died in 1894. At the age nine he went to Wilna, where he studied the Talmud in the yeshiva of his brother Joseph Rumsch, and then at the yeshiva of Rabbi Mordecai Melzer. He then studied the Bible and Hebrew grammar secretly and acquired a knowledge of German and other secular subjects. He planned to go to Germany to obtain a scientific education but his relatives thwarted this because they did not approve of such studies. When in 1853 the Russian government opened public schools to Jewish children in the Vilnius district, he, together with his friend Judah Loeb Gordon, was appointed a teacher in the school of Ponevyezh. Among other works, Rumsch was the author of: "Kur 'Oni" (Wilna, 1861; printed at the expense of the Russian government), a free Hebrew translation of "Robinson Crusoe" from the German of Rauch; "Kin'at Sifre Kodesh" (Vilnius 1873), critical glosses on L. Mandelstamm's Russian translation of the Psalms, together with notes on some of them; "Shillumat Resha'im," a story of Jewish life, and "Hatikat Bad" a Hebrew novel (Vilnius 1875); "Megillat Ester ha-Sheniyah" (Vilnius 1883), a historical novel of Esther or Esterka, the favorite of the Polish king Casimir the Great, in Hebrew based on the German; "Bat-Hayil," a historical novel of Jewish life in Spain in the fourteenth century, freely translated from Philippson and published in "Ha-Asif," 1889, v. 1-47. He contributed also many articles to "Ha-Karmel" and "Ha-Meliz" and left in manuscript some Hebrew stories and notes on the Bible.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. In Hebrew. 10 pages, 71 leaves, 15 leaves. Two title pages. Pages browned. Alexander Ziskind Maimon (July 18, 1809 - July 12, 1887) was a Lithuanian Jewish author and scholar of the Talmud and Mishnah. Maimon was born in Seirijai, Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire to a family who claimed agnatic descent from Maimonides. His commentaries on biblical literature, Mishnah, Talmud and Halacha were publicized from his younger years and throughout his life. He was a writer for HaMagid Hebrew newspaper, known by the acronym of his and his father's name - AZBRMM (Alexander Ziskind ben Rabbi Moshe Maimon). His daughter's tombstone refers to him as "Maimon from Seirijai". In 1872 he is mentioned as "Rabbi Ziskind Maimon" in HaMagid in a list of people from Seirijai who donated to the Persian relief effort. In his later years, Maimon lived in Kelm? and began writing his book Kovetz Maamariam ve'Inianim Shonim. The book was published by his family in 1894, following his death, and in it were many reprinted articles and researches he had written. He is referred to in Berl Kagan's book Jewish Cities, Towns & Villages in Lithuania (New York: 1991) as: "An author, scholar, philanthropist, and man of affairs." Maimon's grandson, Moshe Maimon, was a noted artist.
