BOOK: Previous Owner Markings; Spine, Boards Bumped; Moderate Shelf Rub to Boards; Edges Lightly Soiled. DUST JACKET: Previous Owner Markings (Price Clipped); Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. Linda McQuaig, Author of The Wealthy Banker's Wife. Signed and Inscribed by Author: "Down with deficit hysteria! Linda McQuaig". SYNOPSIS: For the past few years it has been impossible to open a newspaper or watch television news without encountering a terrifying story about our national deficit. No subject has dominated the Canadian political scene more completely. And no subject has been so misunderstood. We watch helplessly as everything from our cherished health care and educational systems to the little hippo at the zoo falls prey to the axe of the deficit slashers. While the media cheer them on, the slashers have become ever more determined to hack away at our social programs, chanting the mantra that doing so is the only way to cut the deficit. But the real source of the problem can be traced - to an astonishing extent - to a particular policy that was imposed on us with virtually no public input, consultation or understanding. With the excitement of a mystery thriller, Shooting the Hippo tells the real story behind the deficit. The book follows a labyrinthine trail through the top levels of government, Wall Street and Bay Street, the media, the C. D. Howe Institute and the financial "monastery" where crucial decisions have been made outside of public view. Along the way, we meet a host of colourful characters, from John Crow, former governor of the Bank of Canada, to a powerful Wall Street guru who incurred the wrath of Canada's financial community, to high-profile journalists who contributed greatly to the deficit hysteria, and a mild-mannered government statistician who almost succeeded in blowing the whistle on the deficit propaganda. McQuaig argues that we've got the wrong deficit culprit and before we all gather for the public shooting, we should consider the consequences. As we gut our social programs in the name of deficit reduction, we risk destroying the very fabric of our country - and its future. A journalist for almost twenty years, Linda McQuaig has covered a wide range of subjects, from the revolution in Iran to the financial dealings of Canada's establishment. Winner of a National Newspaper Award for uncovering the Patti Starr scandal, she has worked for The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Maclean's and CBC Radio. Her first book, Behind Closed Doors, an expose of the inequities in Canada's tax system, rocked the financial elite. In 1991 she was awarded an Atkinson Fellowship for journalism in public policy, and her next two books, The Quick and the Dead and The Wealthy Banker's Wife, both became controversial bestsellers. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition 1st Printing. BOOK: Spine Bumped; Light Shelf Rub to Boards; Edges Lightly Soiled. DUST JACKET: Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. SUB-TITLE: From Deference to Defiance. SYNOPSIS: Peter C. Newman, whose bestselling books have charted the intricacies of power in Canada for three decades, now brings his explorations to a chilling climax in The Canadian Revolution. With a premise as sweeping in its implications as it is profound in its insights, Newman tears down the artifices of power while explaining the new society and the new politics that have taken their place. Filled with penetrating analysis and the author's far reaching grasp of class and history, The Canadian Revolution is thoughtful, witty and essential reading for anyone trying to understand how Canada was transformed during the past decade. This provocative study chronicles that sea change, showing how Canadians lost faith in their touchstone institutions. Canadian peacekeepers murdered teenagers in cold blood; priests lusted after choirboys' bodies; the British monarchy turned common; lawyers went to jail; the Red Cross's carelessness killed. The book interprets such weird phenomena of the decade as Ralph Klein, O. J. Simpson, telephone sex, Mike Harris, Hibernia, rap music, the Internet, Kim Campbell, designer drugs, Forrest Gump, psychic hot lines, and John Wayne Bobbit-just about everything except a rehash of the Meech Lake Accord. Canada underwent a dramatic upheaval in the years between 1985 and 1995, amounting to a Revolution in society, politics, and attitudes to power. The national trait of deference to authority was replaced by a rampaging new mood of defiance. In their disgust with the elite dealmakers of politics and the collapsed empire-builders of business, Canadians responded with an autonomy and audacity that signalled an exciting, if risky, fresh era. In this enthralling read, Peter C. Newman is guide and chronicler of a Revolution that was fought with no banners, no slogans, and no tanks - but one which overthrew the established order all the same. Born in Vienna and raised in Czechoslovakia, Peter C. Newman came to Canada in 1940. During his stellar career in journalism he has been editor-in-chief of both Canada's most influential magazine (Maclean's) and its largest-circulation newspaper (The Toronto Star). He has also written for The New York Times and The Times of London. His Ottawa column on national politics was syndicated in thirty newspapers with a combined circulation of 2.5 million. Currently senior contributing editor of Maclean's, he writes the weekly Nation's Business column for the magazine. The recipient of a dozen of North America's most coveted literary and journalism prizes, his sixteen books have sold more than two million copies. His chronicle of the Diefenbaker years, Renegade in Power, was hailed as a breakthrough in Canadian political reportage, as was his monumental, four-volume study of the Canadian Establishment, which became the country's all-time non-fiction bestseller. A Companion of the Order of Canada, Peter C. Newman has co-authored television documentaries that won the CBC's Wilderness Medal, several ACTRA prizes, and the prestigious Michener Award for Journalism. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Hard Cover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. First Edition 1st Printing. BOOK: Corners, Spine, Boards Bumped; Light Shelf Rub to Boards. DUST JACKET: Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. FRONT COVER PHOTO BY: Paul Orenstein. BACK COVER PHOTOS COURTESY: Bob Rae. COVER DESIGN BY: Martin Gould. CONTENTS: Prologue--A Dose of Reality at Honey Harbour; One--Getting There; Two--Student Days; Three--English Adventures; Four--The Lure of Politics; Five--Up the Hill and Down Again; Six--No Soft Landings; Seven--In the Valley; Eight--How Sweet the Taste; Nine--"No, Premier"; Ten--Jobs, Jobs, Jobs; Eleven--Our Home and Native Land; Twelve--The Road to Charlottetown; Thirteen--Social Contract; Fourteen--Anyone Can Sail in Good Weather; Fifteen--Hard Choices; Sixteen--Losing & Leaving; Postscript; Index. SYNOPSIS: "Throughout my political life I have disagreed with the perspective that it is more moral to be out of power than in." When Bob Rae announced his resignation as leader of the Ontario NDP in January, 1996, praise for him poured in. Admired for his wit, his resilience and most of all his political compassion, many Ontarians and Canadians recognized that this would be a loss to his political party, his province and the country. But he was also criticized for a perceived inconsistency of policy, betrayal of his constituency and a lack of realism in dealing with the deficit. Many of the criticism could be laid at the door of a party that never expected to win. In this stunningly frank and personal memoir, Bob Rae re-examines his time in politics and shows us where he came from--as a thinker, as a politician and as a Canadian. We read about his education at the University of Toronto, and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His adventures range from organizing a notorious Mothers of Invention event (in which Frank Zappa poured shaving cream into every possible orifice of the organ at Convocation Hall); to studying Hegel and Marx with the great thinker Isaiah Berlin; to feeling under suspicion when a bomb was found on board his flight from Ireland to London. Growing up in a very close family, Rae felt the abiding influence of his father and his father's associates in the Canadian Foreign Service (men like Norman Robertson and Charles Ritchie). But as he pursued his education he also experienced the turmoil of defining his own political beliefs. After becoming a lawyer, his pre-politics career included working for the Steelworkers Union and articling with a labour law firm. In 1977, he entered politics and in 1978 won the Broadview riding in Toronto for the NDP. From Protest to Power details Rae's political life before the unexpected win in 1990: the Accord with David Peterson that ended forty-two years of Tory government, his part in Meech, protesting at Temagami, the campaign itself. And we read too of the twin tragedies in his personal life: the accidental deaths of Arlene Perly Rae's parents in 1985, and the tragic death of his brother David in 1989 of lymphatic cancer. And then the difficult transition from protest to power. Seventy-four NDP members were elected; more than fifty were entirely new to the legislature, and most had never been elected to any public office. It was a group full of life and determination but short on experience. Tough choices had to be made as they came to recognize how bad the provincial deficit really was, and began to navigate the rough waters between the unions and business interests. We read how the difficult decision was reached to achieve a "social contract"--and who supported that p9olicy in public and in private. Reviewing the Charlottetown Accord from the inside gives Rae the opportunity to present his ideas on constitutional reform, unity and interprovincial relations. In the final section of the book Rae looks at the big picture--what does all this mean for social democracy, for Ontario, for Canada? He looks at the dangers of governing in the name of a theory, whether of the left or the right, and at the challenge to social democracy to becom.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition 1st Printing. BOOK: Corners, Spine Bumped; Moderate Shelf Rub to Boards; Spine Moderately Cocked; Edges Lightly Soiled. DUST JACKET: Missing. EXCERPT: INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When work began on this book in early 1990, my main objective was to do justice to a tale whose potential ran in several directions. At its foremost, the Morin-Jessop saga appeared to be a murder mystery perhaps without parallel in this country. This was also a story of two unconventional families living side by side under pressures which had warped their lives out of any semblance of normalcy. By the time I came on the scene, both families had shared a fenceline for five years since their twin tragedies had taken place, living out what can only be described as an appalling mockery of the concept of neighbourliness. The obsessive intensity of their feelings was mirrored in the manoeuvrings which underlay the investigation and prosecution of the murder case itself. While the case had only begun to show its true dimensions, it was obvious to me that it would afford an unusually piercing glimpse into the strange and unpredictable workings of the justice system. What a world lay within. To the astonishment of everybody involved, a legal proceeding scheduled to take less than three months stretched into two and a half years. In the end, it will be for the reader to decide what value society has derived from the uncounted millions of dollars and the tens of thousands of person-hours that went into this case. Suffice to say, the book does not purport to be an "objective" account, devoid of all opinion. The simple act of selecting what was important out of voluminous court transcripts, police reports and interviews is in itself a subjective process. However, my purpose is not to thump the reader between the eyes with opinions. Within these pages, there is more than enough information pertaining to the beliefs and convictions of each side in the drama for the reader to make up his or her mind about their motives and actions. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

SYNOPSIS: The story of the Blue Jays' 1990 Most Valuable Player and most popular star. From Texas to Toronto by way of Cleveland and a dozen other towns in between--that's the trail third baseman Kelly Gruber of the Toronto Blue Jays has blazed to superstardom in the decade since he left home at the age of 18 to become a professional ballplayer. And what a cast of characters there were to help him along the way: How about Dirty Al Gallagher, one of Gruber's tougher managers in the minor leagues, who could chew tobacco, smoke a cigar and snore up a storm all at the same time? How about Bob Quinn, the architect of the 1990 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds, whose 1983 blunder allowed the Blue Jays to swipe Gruber from the Cleveland Indians? Then there's Jimy Williams, the nice guy who got no respect as manager of the Blue Jays; his hot-tempered predecessor Bobby Cox; and cool-as-a-cucumber Cito Gaston, who manages the team today. And of course there is the stellar third baseman himself. In Kelly: At Home on Third we hear of the ballplayer's dog days in the minors, including his fight to hit the breaking ball and rescue his career from dismal statistics. Kelly discusses how he plays today, sharing the secrets of his impressive batting technique and of how he sizes up the guys on the mound. We learn how Kelly's personal life fits into his life in the leagues: his family in Texas, his Canadian wife Lynn and their son Kody, and his strongly held Christian faith. As open and earthy as his home turf of Texas, Kelly offers opinions on all the fun, feuds and scandals that are packed into the 162-game season. Kevin Boland is a veteran sports reporter and writer. He has been a journalist for over twenty-five years and has written for most of the major dailies in Canada, as well as for Reuters in London, England and the Mexico City Daily News. He is also the author of Dave Stieb: Tomorrow I'll be Perfect. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
