Since most documents relating to the Western Front were closed to the public until the 1960s, few of these sources have been explored in depth. Many indeed had hardly been touched. What emerged from them was a picture of systematic falsification at the highest level. Haig began the process, carefully editing his private papers to fit a scenario chosen by himself. Large tracts of his 'diary' were rewritten with the same purpose in mind. The government subsequently supported him by instructing its official historian to support his fictions; since that historian concluded his work by vetting the documents he had used, the Public Record Office's documentation of the Western Front matches the official history's interpretation like a mirror image. Haig's fables have therefore enjoyed a life of three generations in the absence of public knowledge of the counter~documentation either hoarded or destroyed by Haig and the Haig Trustees, or by the government. Haig's Command is based on sources unvetted or only partially checked by the British government and as a result is able to puncture many of the traditional myths. lt demonstrates that Haig's rise owed everything to powerful patrons, little to professional expertise and nothing to battlefield performance. It goes on to put the Somme and Passchendaele campaigns into a new perspective and suggests the underlying reasons for Haig's dismal performance in 1916 and 1917. The causes of the German breakthrough in the spring of 1918 and the Allied advance the following autumn are re~examined, with Haig's inability to confront the spring crisis and his minimal role in the final advance exposed. The book concludes by taking a closer look at why and how Haig and the government conspired to pervert the history of the Western Front.
