Book
hardback in dustjacket, both in fine condition, 258 pages, with photographic illustrations and drawings. John Tasker and Colin Spencer met in 1957, in the upstairs bar of a Brigton pub. It was the start of a brief but intense relationship that would mark each of them indelibly and end only with John's death in Australia thirty-one years later. Which of Us Two? is a collection of letters the lovers wrote to each other - Colin's were returned to him after John's death - linked by Colin's memories of the time and his attempts, often painfully honest, to make sense, with the benefit of hindsight, of what was going on between them and why he let go of such a rare, once-in-a-lifetime relationship. They convey vividly the ardour of the two young men, the moments of extreme happiness, the stretches of misey, frustration and resentment, the zest for everything life had to offer and reluctance to sacrifice a jot of it. And, combined with Colin Spencer's commentary, they provide a fascinating picture of English literary and artistic life in the late Fifties and of the homosexual world at a time when the subject was still unmentionable in polite society. Entertaining, poignant, frank to an extent that may occasionally shock, the book is above all a testament to the lasting power of a first great passion. ISBN: 0670830763.
