This polarised, strident and ultimately inconclusive argument has resulted in Haig becoming detached from his own persona; he has become a shallow symbol of a past age to be pilloried or praised. The middle ground in the Haig debate has been as barren as No Man's Land. There should be no mystery about Haig. Certain from a very early age of his own greatness, he preserved every record of his achievements: diaries, letters, official reports, etc. The opinions of his contemporaries are likewise readily available. But until now this material has not been used to construct a complete and accurate picture. Critics and supporters have raided the historical records for evidence of the demi~god or demon and have ignored that which conflicts with their preconceptions. They have likewise raced through his early life in order to get to the war, in the process ignoring the complex process of his development as a soldier. Analyses of Haig's command have consequently been as shallow as the prevailing images of the man. After eight years of painstaking and detailed research into previously neglected sources, Gerard De Groot is now able to give us a more complete and balanced picture. This book, which will appeal both to the general and the specialised reader, is not simply a critique of Haig's command in the war, but an exploration into his personality. Close attention to his early life and career reveals him as a creature of his society, a man who mirrored both the virtues and the faults of Edwardian Britain. What emerges is an intense, dedicated, but ultimately flawed servant of his country whose ironic fate it was to grow up in one age and to command in another.

(Hardcover, 1988 ). 1988 1st edition. 8vo (159 x 241mm). Ppxiv,178. Colour and b/w photographs, b/w illustrations, bibliography. Black boards, spine titled in gilt. Minor faults. Very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. "Few flyfishers can resist the lure of running water. Whether it takes the stately form of one of the great chalk streams of southern England, the awesome power of an Usk or an Eden or the enchanting intimacy of a highland burn or a West Country moorland brook, its magic casts its spell and draws us back and back. River Trout Flyfishing considers every aspect of that magic - from the very waters we fish and the reasons for the differences in character between them, through the fish and the insects that form their diet, to the tackle and tactics required to take trout, sea trout and grayling from streams and rivers of all types. In the process, it sweeps away many of the inaccurate myths and much of the off-putting mystique that has been built up around fast-water flyfishing over the years." Chapters include:- The legacy of the past; The rivers and their fish; The trout's food; The tackle for the job; To cast a trout fly; A matter of timing; Dry-fly fishing; The upstream nymph; Wet-fly fishing; Sea-trout fishing; Grayling fishing; Lessons for the future. Appendices include:- Regional hatch charts; Fly dressings; The fly-fisher's knots; Useful addresses. .
