Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Beginning in 1937, the three painters, Paul Cadmus (19041999), Margaret French (19061998) and Jared French (19051988), vacationed together in Provincetown and Fire Island. With a shared camera, they photographed themselves and their friends against a background of vast, empty beaches. Driftwood, umbrellas, white sheets and old fishing nets were arranged with models, to form oddly surreal compositions. Many such arrangements were later adapted for use in the artists' paintings, several examples of which are also reproduced here. "These small photographs are revealing in their beautiful compositions, and provide insights as to how these painters interpreted their visual richness for their painting. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This young white New Yorker came South with a camera and a keen eye for history. And he used these simple, elegant gifts to capture the story of one of the most inspiring periods in Americas twentieth century. John Lewis, US CongressmanIn the summer of 1962, photographer Danny Lyon packed a Nikon Reflex and an old Leica in an army bag and hitchhiked south. Within a week he was in jail in Albany, Georgia, looking through the bars at another prisoner: Martin Luther King Jr. Lyon soon became the first staff photographer for the Atlanta-based Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which already had a reputation as one of the most committed and confrontational groups fighting for civil rights. Lyon traveled with the SNCC from Mississippi to Georgia to Tennessee to Alabama, as well as to the 1963 March on Washington. More than just his photographs, Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, updated by Twin Palms in 2010, contains Lyons archive of press releases, speeches, flyers, personal recollections and even facsimiles of the typed notes he took while working with the SNCC. Introduced by Julian Bond, former member of the Georgia State Senate, and with an essay by the late congressman John Lewis, this visual memoir relates the firsthand experience of a witness to one of the greatest activist movements in American history.Danny Lyon (born 1942) was born in New York and studied history and philosophy at the University of Chicago. While a student there he met one of the Big Six civil rights leaders, John Lewis. He served as chief photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and documented nearly every major event of the Civil Rights Movement. In Lyons later career, he produced several acclaimed photographic series on motorcyclists and prisoners in the Texas Department of Corrections. He has received two Guggenheim fellowships and was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in 2022.John Lewis (19402020) became involved in the Civil Rights movement when he was still a teenager. He was introduced to both Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., and participated in the 1960 Nashville sit-ins as well as the 1961 Freedom Rides. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966, he was one of the Big Six civil rights leaders who coordinated the March on Washington. He represented Georgias 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 until his death in 2020.Julian Bond (1940-2015) co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. Bolstered by the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Bond ran for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives. He served until 1975, when he was then elected to the Georgia State Senate. From 1998 to 2010 he was the Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In Memories of the Southern Civil RightsMovement, Danny Lyon tells the compelling story of how a handful of dedicated young people, both black and white, forged one of the most successful grassroots organizations in American history. The book depicts some of the most violent and dramatic moments of Civil Rights Movement, including Black Monday in Danville, Virginia; the aftermath of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham; the March on Washington in 1964; and the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1962. Lyon's photos were taken when he was the first sta photographer for the StudentNonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The book also includes a selection of historic SNCC documents such as press releases, telephone logs, letters, and minutes of meetings. Pictures, eyewitness reports, and text take the reader inside the Civil Rights Movement, creating Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In The Black Eye, Israeli photographer Michal Chelbin (born 1974) continues to explore the world of athletes and performers from Eastern Europe, Israel and England. The athletes and wrestlers in this series are studies in contrasts: youth and manhood, strength and weakness, tenderness and rigidity, odd and ordinary, splendor and roughness. Presented in a clear and balanced format, the pictures challenge the viewer with their ambiguity. While revealing little about the lives of Chelbins subjects, the photos do reveal an internal drama, capturing a tension between the gaze and the presence of each individual. These athletes are exhausted after a hard training session or fight. Some are breathless, sweaty, and fatigued. Chelbin searches for a certain expression in which they have almost calmed their breath but not yet fully regained their self-awareness. It is a moment when they have lifted their mask and surrendered to the camera. Her aim is to expose this moment, and the contradiction between the person and the persona. Photographs, chiefly of wrestlers. Also includes a brief story, "Snowman" by Etgar Keret, translated by Jessica Cohen. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. "Stivers (born 1953) takes us into alcoholic twilight. Shuddering exiles in watery purgatory, the human figures as well as forests, clouds, plants, works of art and even architecture seem never actually to have existed . Each photograph visualizes the anguished lament of the current that runs through him . All of this mirrors his dream books and journals, where the trials of actual experience and his mind's nocturnal dream machinery are indistinguishable. Stivers's pictures are figments of his material philosophy of escape." Eugenia Parry Stivers takes us into alcoholic twilight. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Never-before-seen black-and-white nightclub photographs enliven the typical Eggleston oeuvreThis monograph on American photographer William Eggleston highlights his photos taken on a large-format 5 x 7 camera in the early 1970s. It features both color and black-and-white photographs, the latter of which are a never-before-seen series of portraits taken inside the nightclubs that Eggleston frequented. Museum director and contemporary art curator Walter Hoppsan early champion for Egglestoncharacterized these images as offhand and spontaneous but insistently stark; their brutality is heightened by the absence of color. The volume also features Eggleston in conversation with filmmaker Michael Almereyda, who directed a documentary on the artist in 2005.William Eggleston (born 1939) encountered photography and abstract expressionism while studying at Vanderbilt and the University of Mississippi. Inspired by the work of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eggleston began working with color film in the 1960s and is credited with popularizing its use among artistic photographers. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art.Michael Almereyda (born 1959) originally studied art history at Harvard before leaving the university to pursue filmmaking. He is best known for his 2000 adaptation of Hamlet starring Ethan Hawke and Julia Stiles. His 2005 documentary William Eggleston in the Real World was nominated for a Gotham Award. With it [his camera and portable strobes] Eggleston could shoot in virtual darkness in the juke joints and clubs around Memphis. The portraits are offhand and spontaneous but insistently stark; their brutality is heightened by the absence of color. The portraits have a leveling effect-whether biker or debutant, the people Eggleston photographed are clearly denizens of the same realm. [He] is reminding us: look closely, each of these individuals is subtly different. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
