Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed, some very slight fingerprint staining to back jacket. Not price clipped (25s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 144pp. Romantic adventure, set in mid 19th century Wales by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-53). Who is the mysterious 'Rebecca' swathed in black skirts with a shawl drawn over his mouth, his eyes flashing from beneath the brim of his tall black hat as he exhorts his 'daughters' to tear down the hated tollgates? On June 6th 1839 a group of Welsh tenant farmers attacked a toll house. They tore down the toll gate, smashed up the keeper¿s house and burnt it to the ground. Violent incidents, known as the 'Rebecca Riots', protests against the high cost of the tolls on the turnpike roads, took place sporadically all over west and south Wales until 1843, when the ringleaders were caught and transported to Australia. During the riots, men disguised as women attacked the gates. They called themselves 'Rebecca and her daughters'. This is most likely to be after a passage in the Bible where Rebecca talks of the need to 'possess the gates of those who hate them' (Genesis XXIV, verse 60).

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, limited to 500 numbered copies (this being #29). 4to. 54pp. Mustard yellow cloth lettered in gold at the spine. With gilt-decorated endpapers and seventeen drawings and vignettes. A virtually fine copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly toned at the spine panel, the whole housed in a somewhat distressed example of the patterned card slipcase. Signed note from Sydney Box and his wife Muriel laid-in. The first appearance in print of this incomplete Dylan Thomas script for an original film operetta ("It will be all about a man who loves a bicycle. It s called 'Me and My Bike' and it covers the whole span of this man's life. Hi rides penny-farthings, tandems, tricycles, racing bikes and when he dies at the end, he rides on his bike up a sunbeam straight to heaven, where he's greeted by a heavenly chorus of bicycle bells" Thomas). Penned in 1948 when he was on contract to Gainsborough Pictures (Sydney Box was an executive producer for the firm), Thomas conceived of five major sequences for the film, but only the first was written, and that one is only partially complete.
