Fine. First edition. Hardcover book . Black cloth lettered in gilt to spine, and pictorial dustjacket lettered in white on brown-red paper. 180pp, large folio. With 80 b&w plates reproducing the wash drawings and plans made by Samuel Chearnley in 1745 for various architectural garden buildings and features such as grottoes, obelisks, fountains and arches. The originals are in Birr Castle in Ireland. There are also small b&w ilustrations in the catalogue of Chearnley's work by Peter Harrison that follows. With essays by T.G. Barnard and Christine Casey as well. Very nicely printed on cream paper. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 349 pp. 34 x 24 cm. This sumptious book is beautifully .Illustrated with 183 plates, and more than 100 other illustrations. White blocked blue boards, in a dustwrapper which is showing slight wear and which has a little rubbing on a small part of a fold. The book itself is in good condition, but with a bit of a lean where it has not been carefully shelved. Unpackaged weight 2.5 kilos, so overseas shipping will require extra postage. Stapleton, 1747-1801, was the most skilled stuccodor working in the neoclassical style that dominated Dublin interior decoration in the final decades of the eighteenth century. This is the first full-length study of his work, and publishes for the first time the collection of drawings from his workshop which are now held in the National Library in Dublin.
