Book
Condition: new. (Paperback, 2005). 2005 1st edition. Spiral-bound red pictorial card covers. Ppiv,67. B/w line illustrations. Mint new copy. Donald Downs has been expertly tying flies for many years. Designed rather in the manner of Alfred Wainwright's famous fell-walking guides, this attractive facsimile of a handwritten notebook gives excellent drawings and step by step instructions. It will be invaluable to all fly-tyers for its practical content, and no doubt treasured in years to come, simply for its thoroughly satisfying appearance. Downs learned fly dressing from Geoffrey Bucknall and illustrated several books for him. He also worked with John Veniard, illustrating his books and tying flies in demonstrations with him. "In this book I aim to introduce a new technique with each fly - and enough flies to cover the minimum throughout the season." "This book is intended for those who feel that trout fly dressing is difficult [and] for anglers who dress one or two flies - and would like to dress a few more. It therefore looks at [the particular] techniques in some detail." Downs kept sketches of every fly pattern he ever tied, and the selection of flies in this book is compiled from these. "In the 1950s and 60s salmon populations were under severe threat. Hydro-electric power and poaching gangs were indiscriminately killing large numbers of fish and illegal drift netting was widespread. As if that wasn't enough the dreaded salmon disease UDN was found in many British rivers. There were uncontrolled and expanding open seas fisheries off Greenland, Norway, Ireland and the Faroes. With so many threats to the future of salmon it was obvious that something had to be done. The 1966 Annual Conference of the Salmon and Trout Association proposed that an independent Trust should be set up to undertake research, education and management of salmon stocks. The Trust was the idea of a group of like-minded salmon enthusiasts, and many others closely involved with salmon fisheries and management gave their support to the scheme. A year later, in 1967 the Atlantic Salmon Research Trust came into being, the forerunner for what is now known as the Atlantic Salmon Trust. This book provides a history of the Trust, its work and increasingly international influence, and considers the great advances made in science and fisheries management that may help to secure a future for the Atlantic salmon." .

With the invention of the railways in the early nineteenth century, anglers were, for the first time, able to fish the length and breadth of Britain. The great train companies positively courted them, with special trains and angling club discounts. From the Highlands of Scotland to the English Channel, the Welsh mountains to the Norfolk Broads, no corner of the British mainland was ignored by the emerging railway network - and where the iron rails appeared, so too did the fishermen. In A Train to Catch Jon Berry, angling historian, fisherman and travel writer, attempts to follow in their footsteps using today's rail network, with fascinating and often highly comic consequences. From Hampshire Avon barbel and Windermere charr to garfish from Victorian piers: an enjoyable jaunt with one of our favourite - and most literate - all-round angling authors. .

Since the 1950's Scotland's salmon stocks have come increasingly under threat - from hydro-electric power, poaching, salmon farming, illegal drift-netting, UDN, and open sea drift-net fishing. This book looks at the importance of salmon to Scotland and examines in detail the past and continuing threats to its survival and the way in which these have been, and are still being tackled, by legislation, fisheries trusts and international organisations". .
