Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Pat Keely (illustrator). 1st Edition. A late (possibly the last?) book by this author whose first book was published in 1932. He wrote historical fiction and biography. There are some insignificant little endpiece drawings in this book, and a magnificent dust jacket design (looking a little like Lynton Lamb) by Pat Keely, which is interesting. Is this the same Pat Keely (Patrick Cokayne Keely, who died in 1970) who is so well-known as a poster designer? He did some wonderful posters in the 1930s for London Transport and the Post Office, and also produced some memorable war-time posters. I think it must be, but if so I can't find any indication that he illustrated any book other than this one, so why did he choose this rather obscure book? Name on endpaper, top edge slightly browned, tiny knock to a top corner, but looks near fine in a near fine dust jacket with minimal wear at extremities.

The foreword is by the Dalai Lama.Laid in is a letter to Matthiessen from the Harvill Press, sending him the book and noting that Tsering Shakya, a great admirer of Mathiessen, very much wanted him to receive a copy.

This is a work of fiction. When an epidemic threatens to destroy the silk trade in France, the young merchant Herve Joncour leaves his doting wife and his home in the small town of Lavilledieu and travels across Siberia to Japan to obtain eggs for a fresh breeding of silk worms. During his negotiations with a local baron he is struck by a non-oriental girl who is the baron's concubine. Love blossoms between them as shown by a number of recondite messages in the course of the four visits he pays to Japan. How their secret love unfolds is to in narration as smooth as silk.
